Need a more versatile amp

well, i have 2 fenders (twin and Super 112) that serve my cleans tones (and with a Boss DS1.....they do they nice punchy SRV type of thing)...... but what i want now is a veratile amp with really nice cleans, that arent Fender cleans though, if you know what im sayin.....but also has a versatile overdrive distortion type of thing as its best sounding features...... more or less i want a 2 channel amp for the versatility.....overdrive and distortion are more of what im gearing towards with this amp, so they have to be awesome....the heaviest i would need to get this amp to be is an ACDC type of sound.....i prefer more vintage tones such as Claptons and and Led Zeppelin.... and i will be running the amp loud....so is there any suggestions for the type of amp i want? i know it might seem im asking alot, but in reality, im not lookin for too much.....just a good clean channel and a few awesome overdrive sounds from the other channel

i will have anywhere from $800- 900 to spend on the amp and possibly more if i want....i will be running it through a MArshall 1960A 4X12 cab...so i want an amp head

im thinking about the Marshall DSL100 just because i have always liked it when i played it before......ive played most amps that you could name, so i already have ideas of amps im gonna be checking further into...... but i just wanna see some suggestions you guys might have

Hey buddy.....I was going to recommend the DSL Marshall series and saw you mention it at the bottom of your post...Nice clean tones and the Marshall versatility gain tones you need...

Re: Need a more versatile amp

you could try to find one of the 50w crate VC heads. also, i think the newer crate vintage series also has a head in there. even if not, get a cab. the crate VC series are some great all tube amps, very very underrated. a few others here have them and can back that up. not fender cleans, but very good cleans, with plenty of distortion for anything up to and maybe even past ac/dc. great great amps, perfect for what u want, and well under the 8-900 range

Re: Need a more versatile amp

You might want to check out the later JCM800 channel switchers 2205/2210's...standard Marshall OD but a rather unique clean (more like Plexi cleans)

Re: Need a more versatile amp

well, what i am also looking for is for the amp to be open sounding, and not too smooth or dark, and no compressed metal tones......more of a bright sound with alot of cluck and response, great singing classic rock styled overdrive tones (not really distortion, but more of a natural sound)...... and i just want it to be ALOT differnt than the fender sound, and for the amp to have some nice versatlity, so i will have more tonal options to mess around with.......

i have played DSLs but never really test drived them for a long time and i dont remember their tone all that well either............ are they more of a modern sound with a good amount of gain or are they more vintage voiced? what im really lookin for is the tones on Zeppelins "The Ocean" or

Re: Need a more versatile amp

hahaha, 'that arent fender cleans' LOL indeed.. every fender amp that i tried (princeton, rock-pro, even the hot rod deluxe) sounds the same on clean

i'd say go for a marshall.. or if you have more dough, a mesa mark Iv .. just read the last responce.. the mesa is out lol

maybe a VOX? dont have any experience with them apart of that they are pretty bright sounding

Re: Need a more versatile amp

ha yeah....everybody seems to want fender cleans, not my case here

i took Vox into consideration also, but do they make any heads? i love AC30s, but i will be left with the 4X12.....

Re: Need a more versatile amp

My brother-in-law has a Peavey Classic 30, and it sound like exactly what you're looking for. (I think they also have a 50-watt model.) I'm never satisfied with the cleans on my Marshalls or the distortion on my Fender, but his Peavey sounds great clean and dirty.

I should sell all my amps, buy a Peavey, and use the extra money to buy more guitars. :laugh2:

Re: Need a more versatile amp

Bluesjunkie has it right. Fender cleans are incredible. Marshall Drive Amazing. I tried to find these two sounds in one Amp, and never did find it. So I use Both Marshall and Fender. A/B'd with the necessary effects on a board it gives me everything I need. Consider the Marshall DSL and A/B this with your Fender, you won't regret it!

Re: Need a more versatile amp

peavey classic 50 or 30!!!! that would be killer for cleans (i have one), and the crunchy tones i get can be compared to anything form allman type overdrive to ac/dc to even heaveir....

Re: Need a more versatile amp

well.....i was just playing my Hiwatt and its just so powerful, with SO much bass that i cant take it.... i always had the idea of A/B the fender with something else, but ive come to realize that i dont want something with so much BASS as the Hiwatt has
whatever amp i get, i dont want it to have alot of Lows and low mids......those bother me alot, i need a real tight bottom end with spank on the low E and A strings.....

i do like those Peavey amps, but i can pick those up easily if i want (theres a 50 watt for $200 in the paper now, although its from the 70s, which i would gravitate more towards anyways)

what about those Bassman reissues? i am also accepting any suggestions for combo amps because i am willing to sell my 4X12 if it will work out better that way

Re: Need a more versatile amp

Marshall JCM 600......GREAT cleans and good oldschool gain. And to top it off, cheap for a 60w tube amp. It is a very, very underrated amp.

Re: Need a more versatile amp

If your gonna go the DSL route (which i highly recommend) dont go for the DSL 100 because even my DSL 50 is too loud for what i want, SO id Say go for the DSL50 and attenuator(im still planing on an attenuator but no money right now), When i seen that you want nice cleans but not fender cleans but stevie ray type thing , i though DSL.. But then the AC/DC type sound it nails totally, its lead 1 overdrive nails the ac/dc tone , although i do believe all angus and malcome us is their geetars and leads straight into JCM 800's (correct me if im wrong) i would recommend the DSL from what ive had experience with but i havens really tried any classic marshalls , only the modern ones (DSL,TSL,ModeFour) and DSL was my fav, and i can get great tones,

Very reliable and versatile and i'd highly recommend it, but do try out the JCM 600-900's and whatever else you can get your hands on....IMO ignore the TSLs cos there just full of bells and whistles that seem to ruin the sound...

Re: Need a more versatile amp

how bout the AC30s..... do they get loud enough for most gigs? ive played them and the tone is unbelievable, but ive never tested how much air they can push.......?

Re: Need a more versatile amp

Check out the Mesa Boogie Marks. The cleans are super and the crunch is to die for!

Re: Need a more versatile amp

ac30, i have a 1X12 clone in a sense, plenty of air pushing, and loud for gigs, its class A, heck yea, if ur playing a huge gig, mic it up.

its not a 4X12, but a 2X12 ac30 is plenty big and loud, u could always get a 2X12 cab also

If you want something with different cleans, this would be a good option ^^^

If you were thinking of Vox, they have great darker sounding cleans that may serve you very well.
