Need a single coil neck pu that fits with a 59 / Custom Hybrid

I have a light weight Swamp Ash body with a single wood mount 59/Custom hybrid trembucker, Floyd Rose bridge and a birdseye maple neck & fretboard.
My plan is to rout the body for a single wood mount neck pickup to make it more versatile.
I want a true single coil, vintage to medium output, it needs to have a bit of midrange growl because Swamp Ash is kind of scooped.
Not too bassy and warm.

What do you think of a Antiquity Texas Hot neck pu?

Or maybe a YJM Fury? I know its not a "true single coil" but it might work?

great looking guitar ! the first time i heard about the 59/custom hybrid i thought about a single humbucker super strat and your version nails it - about the strat neck pu, wouldn't you have to go with a middle strat pickup in

the neck position rwrp to match with the split single coil in the bridge? also believe the custom coil is used when split so resistance is about 7.1 and should match with lots of strat single coils - your choice of antiquity texas

hot sounds great, but may need the middle pu to match with your humbucker - hopefully a few of the pickup gurus will join in and help - keep us posted, looking forward to seeing more of your guitar -

Im not sure i will need an rw/rp for my purpose.

At the moment, i have a push/push pot for switching between series & parallell wiring but i was thinking of split or parallell humbucker in the middle position of a 3 way switch together with the single coil.

Thanx :)

Remember, the Texas Hots are wound reverse of the rest of the Duncan line, so you will have to remember that. I also like the Classic Stack Plus here. That is the combo I have in my HSS Strat, and it works really well- and is dead quiet.

saw your single control so i thought it was a volume only kind of guitar - didn't think about it being push/pull pot for series/parallel - still a great looking guitar and looking forward to seeing how things progress -

1st guess is Cool Rails,2nd would be SSL-6 w/Rev(LH) Stagger.Or a slight re-route,which may "Fug-Up" the no p/g thing.

Love the Rev Stag, gives more "pop" @ teh nk pos...

Cool rails has been one of my candidates but i think i'll stick to the classic single coil look.

For plenty of midrange growl, you might also consider a P90. I love a P90 at the neck and IMO it's a great tonal companion for the 59/C. If aesthetics are a major concern, there are a couple of places that make natural wood P90 covers... I think that would look great on this axe.

Well a P90 could be a great choise, i know Creamery Pickups in the UK and the Swedish Lundgren Pickups both makes strat sized P90's. I dont think i will route for a regular P90.

I have a set of Vintage Vibe SP-90s, they're Strat sized. I'd characterize them as fat and relatively warm but they can still spank and chime a bit. And they do have more growl that your average Strat pickup, though not quite so much of the classic bark and snarl of a true P90.

Lindgren,
Hi, I strongly, strongly suggest a Duncan TwangBanger. Although it is wound rather hot ( 8K or so ) it has a
COPPER BOTTOM PLATE on it so it gives a great great sparkling sound to what otherwise would be a dull sounding
pickup in that range. I have a 8.5 Seth Lover with a A5 short mag in the bridge of my Stratocaster.
I have 2 set up the same, except one has the TwangBanger in the middle only and the other has the same bridge but
the T-banger is in the neck. They sound so much better. The other winds, when they get past 7K (single coil) just sound dull, to me. I had one of the stronger and a weak '69 Strat p'up and the strong was dull, and the '69 was just too weak.
The combo of your Humbucker and the TwangBanger would sound so beatiful together, I just wish I could prove it
To you. The difference with that Copper plate is night and day.
The middle sound is glorious, magical, on both of my Strats. Any PHASE problem is easily fixed by using the (black)
ground as "Hot" and the (white) hot as "ground". Or vice- versa if you have the 59/custom wired differently.
OK. My Strong 2 cents. I stand by what I say.
Plus Duncan has a 30 day return policy, I have read.
Good luck.

Thanks,
The copper plate you probably know is what helps make the telecaster pickup sound so cool.
If it is too hot, but you like the sound of the copper plate, MJ could easily wind you one closer to the
"normal" strength but still keep that plate on.

Todays update.

Im done with the routing and soldering.
The neck pickup is a Swedish LB Pickup wound to my spec, alnico 5, 42awg & 7K and polepieces matches the fretboard radius..
Kind of a hot texas blues pickup with the right amount of midrange and growl, sounds fantastic.
Wound in the right direction to pair with the 59/Custom in the middle position & push/push pot for splitting the bridge pu.

Pics are always fun to look at.
:)

Nice! Glad you've got it completed. I love single coil neck tone.

Cool idea, Steve. It never occurred to me that the TwangBanger could be a great option for middle or neck position. Good to know it sounds great- may have to try that sometime.
