Hi all, I am new guy on the block. Through a Google search I found my way to a series of postings somewhere in your forum. I registered but can't find my way to the location of the thread. I am overwhelmed by choices to keep my fretboard lubed. This may cause shock and concern but I have used very fine light weight machine oil on my Martin D-18 since I purchased it in late 60's. Played a lot Minn. Hawaii, Philippines, Calif, now NM. Been in smoke filled bars choking incense heavy coffee houses, many years Martin is alive and well. Now re-learning to play on Guild Savoy. Any thought on better way to lubricate my new guitar? Thanks Jared

There are lots of products purported to be the best, and I'm not sure which is or isn't. I guy I've met here in San Antonio raves about "Fretboard Honey." So I bought a bottle at GC and it seems to work great. I use it on my Limited Edition Taylor and the rest of my guitars. It gives my ebony and rosewood that rich, deep shine look and doesn't feel greasy after you wipe the excess off. Seems to last well also.

I don't find the lightweight machine oil strange at all. I used to use gun oil on my fretboards and did for years. I probably wouldn't have looked for an alternative if I hadn't lost the bottle of gun oil.

I'm a fan of Gerlitz' Guitar Honey on Rosewood boards, as well. Here's a link: LINK

Lemon oil is simply mineral oil with a lemon scent......so anything that is a light oil should do well - not anything organic though.

+1 on the Guitar Honey. I bought a used SG with a fb so dry that it looked almost tan. Guitar Honey restored it to its rich brown original state.

I've used Lemon Oil for as long as I can remember.

The Guitar Honey is amazing, works wonders on a Rosewood board. Lemon Oils are great too. If you use Linseed Oil use VERY small quantities...it dries relatively quickly and gets sticky if you don't wipe off the excess....well, with all oils a little goes a long way.

Just get Lemon Oil at Target or Walmart...you get 16 oz for less than the Guitar Honey and it works just as good. It's what's been used for 100 years.

Finger oil : the oil coming out of your own skin's pores when you fret. And I bet its more friendly to both the wood and the player's skin, by nature.

For my ebony and rosewood boards, I use lemon oil. Cheap, easy to use, and smells great.

Dunlop 65 makes a Fretboard Cleaner and a Fretboard Conditioner and they work well to clean and leave the board smooth. Dunlop has a neat little maintenance kit with everything you need to care for your guitar.

Gerlitz Guitar Honey works well, as mentioned.

Guitar Center sells a product called F-One oil by Music Nomad.

I have used all of these products and would recommend any of them. Another product with great reviews is Fretboard Doctor which I have not used.

You should only lube the board once or twice a year. That's all that's needed. Don't forget to keep your guitar properly humidified.

I've had a bottle of D'addario's lemon oil conditioner (probably the exact same product) for about 3 years and it's not even half used.
2-3 drops every string change, rub into the board after 1/2 hour wipe off any excess with kitchen towel, it's good stuff.
Before putting the oil on, get a mug with a warm water and washing up liquid solution, and with a toothbrush clean where the frets meet the rosewood, this is where the gunk likes to live, and again wipe off with kitchen towel

I'm assuming this is a joke too. If you look at what most people's sweat does to strings, hardware and finish it should be obvious that sweat is close to the last thing that you should be using.

Scotts Liquid Gold is what I use.

A guitar tech years ago got me into the 3-in-1 cheap multipurpose oil you can get at some grocery stores and most hardware places for lubricating fretboards and I'll be darned if that hasn't made a huge difference with every rosewood, pau ferro or ebony board guitar I've gone through. I still use it on my Collings and Gretsches.
