Need advice on noiseless singles

Hey guys,

About a year ago, the J100VS in the neck position of my 89 Jackson Dinky died and I’d like to get it back up and running.

I’d like to stay with a noiseless, but with a little more output since the J100VS had a huge drop off in volume when switching to it from the Screamin’ Demon that is in the bridge.

I’m leaning strongly toward a STK-S6 or S7, and maybe a STK-4m for the middle, just to take the guitar all Duncan.

My questions are:

Would the S6 or S7 be too overpowered for the neck position against the Demon?

And, this guitar is set up to mount the neck and middle singles directly to the body, are these available without the threaded inserts, or are the inserts easily removed?

Appreciate any input you all can provide.

I like the STK-S4s in the neck AND middle, but it depends...if you want a thicker, more powerful pickup in the neck, go with the S6. I tend to like the S4, as it sounds round and Stratty. But that might not be what you are going for,

Thanks, Mincer. For this particular guitar, I’m going for a beefy, but Stratty tone in the neck. The old pickup was very vintage sounding to my ears and too bright.

Any ideas on what appears to be brass threaded inserts that I’m seeing in the photos on the SD website and if I can either order without, or easily remove them?

I don't think those inserts come out- from what I remember, they are glued...at least I've never tried to remove them. You might try smaller screws, though. You might also be able to order them without those...I'd call or email SD just to be sure.

Re: Need advice on noiseless singles

I have a Screamin Demon in the bridge paired with a STK-S7 neck (unplugged dummy middle) in a MIM Fender Strat. I had to lower the STK-S7 a lot and raise the Screamin Demon close to the string to balance them volume wise. The STK-S7 as more bass the the Screamin Demon. I think a STK-S4 will be a better match. Might want to try a Parallel Axis Stack single in the neck.

Re: Need advice on noiseless singles

First of all, check if the pickup slot is wide enough for an aftermarket pickup. Most of vintage Jackson/Charvel single coil slots won't accept a pickup swap without some body modification.

Re: Need advice on noiseless singles

Thanks for the input, everyone.

I’ll look into the size concern. I know the current rout does not have room for the traditional base of a single coil, which is why the J100VS was installed in it.

It sounds like the S4 is probably the better option. Now to do a little measuring and get something ordered.

Re: Need advice on noiseless singles

If you fear mismatched output with the Screamin' Demon, and don't mind giving that Dinky a more modern look, I suggest a Vintage Rails middle / Cool Rails neck, and getting a push/pull pot to wire the CR in series/parallel. I have that set on a Dinky with a Full Shred bridge, and it allows me to jump from SuperStrat rocking tone to vintage Stratiness in a pinch.

I also own a Strat clone with a Hot Rails bridge and two Classic Stacks, and it still allows me to play Death Metal solos on the neck.

Either way you go, the tones on all mentioned pickups won't leave you hanging.

Re: Need advice on noiseless singles

Have you even tried raising the neck pup close to the strings and lowering the SD so the outputs match. I have never found the Demon in the bridge to have excessive output, it balances well with just about any low output pup in the neck

Totally agree, the Screamin Demon is not high output, it even gets overpower by my STK-S7 neck.

Thanks everyone.

I had tried to raise the original pickup, but it was a very fine line between max output and the pickup affecting tuning.

However, it’s a moot issue at this point since the original pickup died, but I’m also considering just moving the neck pickup to the neck position since I don’t use the middle position much.
