Need air compressor info.

I need some recommendations on air compressors. I am painting guitars at my home so I don’t need industrial compressors. I would like recommendations on the least I can get away with and mid range compressors or just tell me the one that I need to get.

What psi do you run your compressor at and what psi do you run at your paint gun on?


The gun that I have is an Ingersoll Rand HVLP 270G. It is rated at 8.2 cfm and I am thinking that the regulator at the gun is going to be set around 20 psi or less. So do I have to mach the 8.2 cfm of the gun to the compressor seeing how I am not going to run the gun full out?

I also have a Paasche airbrush that I will be using sometimes. What psi would be recommended for that?

What nozzle sizes are recommended for the different stages of spraying S&S, primer, paint and clear coat?

I am probably living some things out so feel free to say anything I should know.

I will quite pestering you guys and ladies at some point but I will pass on the knowledge to others as I go.

I know nothing about painting with compressors, but I had to figure out what I needed about compressors to drive desoldering stations for my shop

I ended up buying a Home Depot Husky "easy air" 1.5 Gallon compressor mostly because it was the quietest one available that could deliver 2 CFM at 90 psi and it was very reasonably priced. Most compressors make a hell of a racket and this one is markedly quieter.. It's also one of the oil free teflon plated ones.. which makes it pretty much maintenence free.

Most compressors were either much larger and noisier, or much smaller and targeted towards airbrushing only... but this one was still cheaper than many of the airbrushing compressors and could still drive a few tools and fill up car tires if I ever needed it.
