Need help choosing an amp - V16 Palomino vs. AD50VT

Well, as an early Christmas gift and since my band is going to be gigging soon, my dad said he'll buy me a new better amp. At the moment, there are two I'm looking at; the Crate V16 Palomino and the Vox Valvetronix AD50VT. I know they are two very different amps (one being a modeller and the other a tube amp), but to me, they seem to be the two best amps I can get for that price range.

The pros for the Palomino are that I get an all-tube amp, a nice one at that, with a good sound (I've tried it quite a few times before). Its small enough that I can change the speaker to something like a Greenback or G12H30, which I can't do in the AD50VT because of the wattage. It has reverb, and a nice boost, and is small enough that I can crank it a bit at home and still be loud enough for band practice and smaller gigs (I'm not going to have any huge gigs anytime soon I don't think, and if I did I'd be mic'd).

The only con I can see for the Palomino is it not being loud enough for some gigs. My other guitarist uses a 30-watt solid state Marshall at the moment, and I'm confident that I can match that in volume, maybe even get louder, but I'm worried about cutting through at gigs. Our drummer isn't incredibly loud, but not very soft either (Except when he needs to be).

Pros for the Vox are that I get a bunch of tones in one box, and it should be loud enough for practice and gigs. I get a bunch of effects as well, and with the headphone jack and variable wattage selector, I should be able to use it at home as well with ease. Note that I don't use a lot of effects, and I doubt I'd want to use the wah on the Vox, maybe just the delay or reverb.

The cons are that I don't get the sounds I want precisely, and my tone will always be a bit of a compromise between what I really want and what I get. I feel the effects would be wasted since I don't really use them (except reverb, which is on the Palomino). Its also heavier and bigger then the Palomino.

I'm undecided at the moment, and can't really figure out which one I'd rather want, so if anyone could give me a hand figuring this out, I'd really appreciate it.

Find a used 30 watt Palomino?

I'm looking into these, but its hard to find one around here, or on Ebay for that matter...theres a head and one combo on Ebay, the black V-series ones. I know I'll be able to buy either the V16 or the AD50VT at the store for around the same price, so at this point, unless I find a V32, its between those two amps.

IMO, for a band situation, between those two, go with the Vox. If you want to hear that speaker over the band, get the Vox. You'll need to mic up the Crate and depending on how loud your band is, you may have a hard time hearing the amp itself.

I can tell you first hand that the Vox keeps up no problem and then some. The only effects I use are the delay and reverb too. Having those different models available is great.

A couple other options, look at the Crate V3112 or V5112. The V3112 is the same as the V32 Palomino. The Palomino's just have the fancy tolex on them. I honestly don't think there is any difference in the circuitry.

Hey man go with the VOX i own the exact model and i like the different sounds you get out of it, like you said you can adjust the wattage, and once you get the hang of your amp you will be amazed how many great tones you will get .

Wish I had the foresight to look at tube amps when I was 15 :chairfall
