Need help for pickup suggestion on a 24 frets guitar...

Dear all,i really need help for picking a neck pickup for my Ibanez RG(mahogany body)

It's the only 24 frets guitar i have at the moment and i really couldn't stand with the sound from the Neck position

At first i thought it's because of the active pickups(EMG 81/85)

And yesterday i swapped all components out and put a set of Peter Florance Voodoo 59' into it,and found that it's still not that kind of sound i got from a 22 frets guitar, sounds more trebly and harsh

Is there any chance that some of the pickups are designed for this purpose? To get a more "Natural" sound from the neck pickup on a 24 frets guitar like a 22 fret one?

Thank you!!

Not really. Thats the trade off with 24 frets. Has something to do with the overtone series and nodes. (Someone else can probably explain better)

For guys that grew up playing 22 and 21 frets they expect a certain sound. Me I don't really care either way but you might want to look at what guys like Steve Vai other 24 fret players have done to combat it.

Re: Need help for pickup suggestion on a 24 frets guitar...

I was practicing on my 24 fret V in the evening. I am honestly thinking of keeping it a single pickup guitar. I dont think you can get the same tones as you can with a 21 or 22 Fret guitar with the neck pickup. I think what Joe Sat has on his latest guitar a 24 fret is the way to go a single coil, in the neck.

on a 22 fret guitar, the neck pickup is right where the 24th fret would be, That's one of the harmonic nodes for the strings, especially with the open strings. So you don't pick up any of the first harmonic on open strings. the 24 fret guitar has the neck pickup shifted a bit so there is a bit of the first harmonic that shows up in the output

For the longest time, Joe Satriani played (as far as I can tell) 22-fret guitars -- Kramers, and then generation after generation of his signature Ibanez models. All H-H, all 22 frets. I suspected he was particular about the neck pickup tone, and then I saw this:

Re: Need help for pickup suggestion on a 24 frets guitar...

I have Ibanez RG270 with I think basswood body and maple 24-frets neck and I think I'll never make it sound as any other of my guitars, however, they are not only 22-frets but both bodies and necks are mahogany. Besides, some influence on sound may come from Floyd Rose. On the other hand, I have few guitars to have different sounds.
What kind of sound would you like to get? This information could be helpful.

Thanks for all the informations!Really useful!

I was trying to get a big fat deep and warm clean tone on the neck position...

Just pull a set of Dimarzio Evolution bridge and Paf Pro neck on my other guitar and put it into the RG today....

Finally found something close to what i'm looking for but the sounds are still a bit too bright

And bazie,i think you're right about the Floyd Rose - they do affect the sound a lot!

When i bought the Ibby i choose this because it have a mahogany body and maple top, thought it would sound close to my Gibby LP,Melancon etc,but the thing i overlooked is the bridge type!

Really a lesson for me this time!:9:

Re: Need help for pickup suggestion on a 24 frets guitar...

24-fret guitars by necessity push the neck pu a bit closer the bridge and away from the 22-fret sweet spot. A lot of times with the HSS Superstrats, they still have a bit of a gap between the end of the fingerboard and the neck pickup, which makes the problem much worse.

I see Satriani's guitar above has the rails pu crammed up against the fingerboard. He or the builder is well-advised. If he were to call me to help solve this problem or improve what he already has there, I would wind the coil facing the neck hotter than the other one. It wouldn't be perfect (there'd be some hum on high gain) but it would be a lot better.
