Need help getting a rock tone

Me and some friends decided to start a Ramones coverband just for fun. The problem is I have a Dimebucker in my guitar, a great pickup but hardly a rock pickup. So what choises do I have? I can always turn the tone knob down a bit, but I have'nt had the chance to test the result yet since I don't have my amp at home. How would it work to use the neck pickup for rythm playing? And if it would work ok, what pickup should I get for the neck. Maybe using both pickups would work? Anyways, all tips are welcome.

Re: Need help getting a rock tone

The ramones primarily used the bridge pickup for everything. A custom or JB pickup in the bridge pickup would be the solution depending on how bright or throaty you want your sound to be. I'd say 90% of the ramone's sound, however, is attitude and %10 Marshall amp :D

Changing the bridge pickup is out of the question since I really like the Dimebucker and I use it in my other band. Since I can't afford a new guitar I'll have to find some clever way of getting a rock tone out of what I got. The band will not be too serious though, just a good excuse for drinking beer and rocking! Haha! So the standard for the sound does'nt have to be extremily good.

Look at Johnny's Mosrite...in the neck there is a Duncan Mini Bucker and in the bridge a Single Coil...I belive an old DiMarzio...I would put a coil tap on the Dimebucker and see how much closer that got, and go from there!

What is the Guitar, and what is the other pickup?

You could put a screaming demon in the neck. It will be crunchy and articulate. Then when you switch the the Dimebucker you can really tear it up.

Hey Dustefjerten, I have found some great ROCK tones with my Dimebucker, you just have to adjust your EQ on your amp, adjust the tone and volume knobs on your guitar and you'll be playing any kind of rock that you want.

That pup will scream like a banshee when needed, but will also growl and snarl and clean up and sing like any other pup when you dial in the right EQ's. This pup is way more versatile than I first imagined because everyone said it had scooped mids-which it doesn't- and I find it has a great voice for those 70's tones like AC/DC, Rush and The Ramones. I also have a split-coil switch that really makes this pup sound great. Just keep trying to dial in tones with this pup because it really is more than a 'metal monster'.

Ok thanks! As said, I don't have my amp at home right now so I have'nt had the opportunity to try thing on it yet. But this sound promosing. Any tips on EQing?

Re: Need help getting a rock tone

Knock the treble down, bring the mids up, dial in the bass for taste! Tone knob on guitar down for blues, volume knob down a little with a hot running amp makes for nice rhythm.

Re: Need help getting a rock tone

Hard to believe you can't get a good rock tone out of the Dimebucker...that pickup rocks! I'd say to try putting it through a Boss DS-1...that pedal is as much a Rock Tone Conditioner as it an overdrive pedal. I use it for Rock rythym tones as well as rock overdriven tones. If I'm in a rockin' frame of mind, I set my DS-1 to about 1/2 way, leave it on all the time and for rock tones it makes everything sound "better". Lew

Re: Need help getting a rock tone

First of all I should say that I haven't tried the pickup. It seems to me that a good way of getting that Ramones tone it is by setting the bass and mid between 2-4 and the treble between 6-8 (this is in a 0-10 scale). I will start in something like 2/4/8 (bass/mid/treble)

Needless to say that you'll need a good amount of gain... :D

Actually I have'nt tried getting a rock tone out of it as I don't have a amp home right now, I just presumed it would have to high output, hehe.

It's band practice on thursday, so I'll try how it sounds then.
