Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

Hello all,

Those who helped me in the speaker/cab dept. Thanks!

So I have a Jackson Dinky Pro. Dk2ht. Alder body, maple neck, JB/59 setup.

I was doing research on other forums on Gibson's 498t. I played one in a SG a while back, an I enjoyed what it had to offer. Aside from numerous counterparts having effect on tone, the body wood, the bridge, Strings through the body/bridge, the nut, the fretboard, the thickness of wood, time of day, color underwear you wore that day, yadda yadda yadda...

To anyone's personal expierence, what would be the closest pickup to emulate a 498T?

I never played one, but for some oddly enough reason, just by I guess a hunch, Dimarzios "FRED" looks to be promising.

I mean, the 498T is just a mild PAF right?

Then the Custom5 pops up everywhere, I never played one either but Im not entirely sure about that either.

So, looking for a bridge pickup, similar to a 498T in a Jackson.

And I'm aware that the closest pickup would be a 498t. Just looking for something in a trembucker :)

Thanks guys!

The 498T is actually wider-spaced. All of the "modern" Gibson bridge pickups that are. The 498T is along with the 500T and the 490T.

:)

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

Not exactly sure a wide spaced Gibson pickup would align correctly under my strings

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

the 498t is not a mild paf at all. its a hotter alnico pup

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

Right, I just figured it would be a hotter PAF type of pickup

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

The Fred would be somewhat similar to the 498t, but you would not get as much low end out of the Fred. The Breed Bridge sounds great in Alder Jacksons.

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

The 498T is wound to ~14K; it's a lot hotter than a PAF and at least somewhat hotter than a Fred. I'm not familiar enough with the Breed to comment on that one, and while the Custom 5 is somewhat similar it doesn't sound like a 498T.

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

A Custom 5 is not mega-hot though. But it is hot.

Just get a C5 Trembucker. You'll love it.

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

498T is sort of like a Custom 5, but has clangier mids and is a bit darker. I could see that being a better match for a bright guitar. Or sounding weird and not quite sitting right. Hard to predict with 100% certainty.

As far as I know, the Custom 5 is Seymour Duncan's most similar pickup.

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

If you want a 498T, get one, it will fit your string spacing well enough.
However....a JB in an alder Jackson is the stuff of legends, why would you change it?

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

I think a custom or custom 5 is probably closest.

Re: Need help on a specific (bridge) pickup for my Jackson

So I finally got the custom 5, just thought it should be noted it's in a alder quilt top body Jackson dinky, rosewood fretboard, Wilkinson tremolo bridge, using 42-9 gauge strings.

So the purpose of this was to find a similar pickup to the 498t.

After taking suggestions, research and debating, I think(to MY ears) it's about let's say 90% close. Now I don't hear the mid scoop in mine. Maybe the wood, has something to do with it. Or maybe it's just me. But it does seem a slight bit darker. But I'm happy thanks for eveyones input! Successful thread!

I've never understood the description of the Custom 5 being "scooped". Glad that you like it.
