Need help replacing a magnet...

ok...

1)
I need an A5 magnet for a Duncan humbucker-std spaced.

2)
I have this DD neck pickup which I hate and I think it's because of the ceramic magnet. Could somebody point me in the direction to a step by step instruction to replace this magnet with an A5 magnet?
I remember a while back someone had pics of this?!

Thanx
Keith

I did this exact swap not too long ago. It was ok, but I changed it back. There's a couple of things you need to be aware of with this particular swap. The ceramic mag in the DD is much thicker than the standard Duncan mag. You'll need to get the spacers that come with an A5 pup also. Or you could just fabricate some from balsa or something. The metal bar that the screws go through is the trickier part.

Ok... Why'd ya change it back Artie?
What did you notice different in tone?

Re: Need help replacing a magnet...

There wasn't anything wrong with it per se. It was very smooth and "jazzy" sounding. One might note that the Benedetto A6, (built by SD), is in fact an A5 12K pup. The thing is, I "borrowed" the A5 from a 59, and put an A4 into the 59. I really liked the 59 better with the A5 and wanted both the 59 and the Distortion back to "normal".

Having said that . . . my Distortion now lives a double life as two halves of two hybrids. One for me, and one for Travis. ;)

Re: Need help replacing a magnet...

Is there another way to determine the magnet polarity rather than using the polarity tester ? Thanks

Re: Need help replacing a magnet...

Hold one long edge of the magnet across the pole pieces of a pickup: opposites attract, so if the magnet sticks to the slug polepieces of a SD PU, that edge is South; if it's repelled by the slugs, that edge of the magnet is North.
