Need help with B Major chord

hi anyone got any tips on learning the b Major chord in the first position?

I have trouble getting my fingers to play the a shape thing whilst stretching my index finger to the 2nd fret 1st string :(

my hands just don't seem big enough to play this chord!!!

Re: Need help with B Major chord

do some gentle stretching exercises to gradually lengthen the reach of your fingers ... as for the Bmaj shape, learn to play barre chords where your first finger goes across all 6 strings at the 2nd fret and your third finger plays the three notes on the 4th fret as needed

good luck

If I'm thinkin' of the chord ur thinkin' of, it's in 3rd position w/ a 1st finger stretch to the 2nd fret.
You can play the same chord in 7th position, on the 5th-2nd stgs without a finger stretch.

Re: Need help with B Major chord

Well if you're only playing a B major chord, you only NEED 3 notes - 1-3-5 (B-E-F#). So dont worry about trying to play any more notes than that. Just try and fit those notes in wherever's comfortable.

And also, if you're playing with a bass player, you can probably do away with the root note, as he/she will play it for you.

(B-D#-F#) yo.

Re: Need help with B Major chord

I play it like this:

[x2444x]

I fret the low B with my 1st finger, and bar the F# - B - D# with my pinky. Yeah, I'm a freak. :p

Though lately, I've grown rather fond of this kind of shape:

[7644xx]

But I suppose that could be even more awkward.

Or you can always do it this way:

[799877]

E major barre chord shape at the 7th fret. I use that one too. :D

isn't he thinking of the chord

x x 4 4 4 2 ?

which is like the barre chord

2 2 4 4 4 2

That would be a B/F# (assuming you're in standard tuning) :p
you've made a distinction without a difference ... the note F# is in a B major chord ... a 'slash' chord notation is only used to denote a bass note not in the chord indicated

See, that's something that always happens in tabs/Guitar World, and I'm not too hot on the naming of chords. They also use the slash notation on all chords similiar to the one you posted.

Re: Need help with B Major chord

I used to think slash chords were called slash chords because Slash used them.

If we're playing x24442, I bar the second fret with my index finger, then middle finger on the 4th fret of the D string, ring finger on the 4th fret of the G string and my pinky on the 4th fret of the B string.

Re: Need help with B Major chord

x24442

I use this shape, and am simply able to do it with two fingers, my index and my ring. It will come eventually.

Ah, well, I just meant it in that the root note isn't the bass note. How else would you denote that? :p

Ah but that would be an inversion

You want this one: x24442

That's a first position B major.

That's pretty much how I do it - except that I use my 4th finger (the pinky). I don't have large hands, but I can effective cover three strings with my little finger - and it's less of a stretch.

I also play the B major at the 7th fret (root inversion) - it just depends on the song and the adjacent chords.
