Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

The combination seems to be very popular, but I'm wondering if it's really so versatile? In 2 weeks I'm getting a really nice custom made guitar, don't know what to put inside. It's mahogany body, rosewood fingerboard, I need it to cover few styles, mainly: Jazz, Fusion and Rock. I thought that maybe JB-Jazz could make a nice match to my new axe, but heard some bad things about them recently, which made me confused.. I was thinking.. maybe Screamin Deamon bridge, PG or 59 neck.. Need a piece of advice..
Thanks! :D

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

Just my opinion but I think it's a great set. The Jazz is my favorite alnico 5 neck pickup.

Some people complain that the JB is to bright but it's really not, IMO. The 59B is brighter if bright means treble.

The JB is a great pickup and remains Duncan's #1 seller.

It's Seymour's favorite pickup set...what does that tell you?

Seymour does use that set in his Tele with 250K volume and tone pots though.

That warms up the set considerably. I find that with 250K pots the JB is even warmer and less trebely than the Custom Custom with 500K pots...and the Custom Custom is a fairly warm pickup.

I'd try it first with 500K pots and then if you feel you want a warmer tone, go for 250K pots.

Thanks Lew! :D I won't hijack Mike's thread anymore so I'll ask here about those Texas Hots: do you ship to europe? How much does it cost?

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

Jazz/JB is a good combo, but I prefer the APH-1/JB combo I had in a Les Paul a few years back.

Any more opinions on the JB-Jazz combination?

what can I say? I got 2 guitar

#1 is a Fender Custom HH JAZZ (Neck) JB (bridge)
Alder wood & rosewood neck

#2 is a Ibanez S470dxqm (mahogany) with the same combination
and what can I say to you? both sound great very difference sound (that is for the wood) and very suitable to any kind of music from Bon Jovi to Trivium

And if you wanna know more about their sound just listen to almost all Megadeth music that the comb of P ups he used before the new mod Livewire must...

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

I just got a JB Jazz combo in my semi hollow. I'd personally go with an alinco II magnet humbucker in the neck like a pearly gates or the alinco II.

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

I'm not a fan of the JB, but it's a good pickup. I like it for it's lead tone when used in the bridge. I'm not a fan of it because I'm primarily a rhythm player. I found it too middy as I prefer a fatter sounding pup in the bridge.

I've only used the Jazz in other people's guitars, and even then not a whole lot....so I won't comment on it other than to say it was good.

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

I installed a JB-Jazz set in my Schecter C-1 E/A semi-hollowbody last weekend. During the week, I recorded some tracks & was ultra impressed! The guitar is a maple top w/ mahogany for the rest... The JB wasn't too bright & sounded thicker and less glassy than the JB trembucker in my alder body Jackson Soloist.

The Jazz in the neck is amazingly versatile! When used with clean by itself, or combined with the JB it sounds incredible. Blending the Jazz with the piezo installed in this guitar yielded some cool tones too... I also loved the tone for slick-sounding solos & even a chunky distorted rhythm tone.

My overall impression is this: I'd purchase this set for another mostly mahogany guitar in an instant!

I personally like the sound of the JB in my Soloist as well, but I have a lot of other tone options with the HSH setup and custom wiring in that guitar. Some people might find the JB bridge tone a little on the bright side, but with the tone rolled back a little, the "harshness" is tamed.

If you're looking for a versatile set of pickups that can rock and also sound good for blues or jazz, I'd say the HotRodded Humbucker set is a good choice!

So that's the name for JB+Jazz? :D

Yeah... you can get them in a set for around $125.00 & the set is called the HotRodded Humbucker Set.

Comes with one black SH-4 JB (bridge) & one black SH-2n Jazz (neck). You save about $15.00 by buying the set -- Not bad!

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

I have the Jazz neck/JB bridge combo with a Push/Pull pot for split in my semi-hollow body. I play Jazz, Blues, Rock, metal, country, ballads and a lot of other stuff. I've found the combination very versatile. The Jazz pickup sounds really good especially at splt. The JB is good too, but the Jazz is just amazing.

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

i feel like a broken record - i hope you all don't tire of reading this

but in an all mahogany guitar, i LOVE the alinico II pro (n) with JB (b) and a 5 -way P type megaswitch (you have to flip a mag and reverse wire one of the pups in order to get all 5 positions hum cancelling - no big deal, even i got it right) ... very very versatile in that exact wood combination (hard tail)

and a jazz/jb set would not be a problem at all, i'd predict you'll dig it tremendously

Which pots do they put for the split setup? 250 or 500k ?

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

The JB and Jazz combo is a classic, Seymour's favorite, and very versatile! It also splits beautifully for single coil tones. I've installed it in more than a few Les Pauls. Works especially well in Epi Les Pauls.

Even nicer, IMO, is the PGn and Custom set.

Also splits beautifully.

What did you hear that was "bad" and where did you hear it? I'm sensing you are another victem of HC.

Re: Need JB-Jazz combo advice..

My vote goes for the Jazz and a Custom such as the C5, C3, CC
For those styles I might go C5 just because it can sound cleaner and sweeter when needed. The Jazz is articulate.

I also like the JB APH1 combo btw.

No, I'm a victim of SD forum :laugh2: Read some posts in the vault, bout the Jazz and they described it as "mid-scooped" :D But nevermind, I'm going for the HotRodded combo anyway :D
