need more open with my Custom Custom

I am using a custom custom in the bridge of my sg standard. Im getting a vintage sound out of my low strings which is fine for old school rock but I would like to open it up a little. Is there a cap mod I could do to brighten up the pickup any? I would like it to have a bit more presence and bite rather than the boxy thud type bass.

Re: need more open with my Custom Custom

i'm currently using a CC in mt SG Special (faded edition)- it's true, cap values do influence your tone + the lead you are using also's accountable.

Re: need more open with my Custom Custom

It sounds like you're wanting to hear the Custom 5 or Custom.
Both pickups have a more open sound. I know they're not the exact pickups they use, but a Custom 5 will take on a more Angus vibe, and the Custom will take on a more Zakk Wylde vibe.

If you take the time to learn how to do a magnet swap, you can have either of those pickups for about $6. Alnico 5 for C5 and ceramic for Custom.

Re: need more open with my Custom Custom

I just converted my C5 to a CC in my Les Paul to see how that pup sounds and so far I like it! Try raising the pole pieces and resetting the pup height that should help with adding some presence, I also use a 150pF treble bleed cap on my volume pts and when backing off the CC it cleans up real nice!

Re: need more open with my Custom Custom

If you've got stock Gibson 300k pots in there, leave the CC alone and just put some 500k pots in. It will make a world of difference.

Re: need more open with my Custom Custom

Important CC note: If by open up you mean a little more highs, the key is to simply raise the poles a bit on the treble side. More high, and just as fat. Remember though - it's not gonna be a sparkle machine. Not what the CC is about. IMO 500k's won't do much for that pup. Tweek screws is biggest change.

Re: need more open with my Custom Custom

I am using the stock pots. Thanks for all the suggestions. Out of all of them I think Im going to go with the magnet swap (to make a custom). Where can i learn how to do this and where can I get an replacement magnet ? Thanks

Re: need more open with my Custom Custom

don't you have to buy the wax and repot the pickup and everything? Seems like a pain in the ass to me thats why i never do it

Forum member, Bada Bing, is a dealer who also sells magnets....look him up in the member list, above this page.

To change magnets....it's easier on open coil pickups, because you don't have to cut the solder joints on nickel, and go through that process as well.

Simply scoot the tape up on both ends, or remove it. On the baseplate, there's 4 brass screws....loosen them halfway, and wiggle the bobbins till the wax seal breaks. Use a flathead screwdriver to push the magnet out, then pull it from the other end with pliers, without chipping the magnet. Lay it on the table in the same direction it came out. Lay your new magnet next to it, and you can use a spare pickup to test both, so they're both running the same direction...polarity. Slide the new magnet in, the same direction the other one was. Tighten the 4 brass bolts gently. I usually hold the pickup on an oven mitt inside my stove to get it hot enough that the wax resets.
Then install it.

Re: need more open with my Custom Custom

Well I ended up yanking the CC from my Les Paul, after a couple of days with it I started to get tired of that tone and also felt that there was to much of a treble loss.

I Put back in the PG bridge and all is fine much better open tone and nice treble bite with out being harsh and cutting mids, glad i tried the CC though it was cool but just not for me!

Hey - I always say the CC is a particular pup and not for everyone. PG on the otherhand - no excuse for not loving that! Have Mercy!!!

It's funny you say that, because that exactly what I think everytime I use a CC for awhile. It's just too choked off in the highs......too buttery overall. For the past couple years, Marin had a CC/C5 clip shootout of the two, and most people liked the CC more on tape. It was surprising to me, because I'd always choose the C5 over the CC. It's more open sounding. I'm starting to like the Custom a lot too. C5 and Custom are two medium/high output pickups that sound great in almost any guitar.

You guy forgot to mention the A3. I have a Custom with which i went thru all magnets, A2,3,4,5,8 and of course ceramic. i love a open tone too so i settled with the a 3. Nice sparkle in the highs and fat mids. The A5 was still compressed and hollow in the mids, but i had a great tone with a full blown Marshall amp, with my Fenders it was a kind of clangy.
