Need Phat Cat Help

Hello Everybody,

I am brand new to this board and need help with a problem. I just bought a 2005 Gibson Explorer (natural w/ gold hardware) and need to know how much the Phat Cats twang if at all. The guitar is all mahgony w/ rosewood fb. I play rockabilly, 50's rock, vintage country, and Social D type tunes. I do not know much about aftermarket pickups and need help from people that are more in the know on this than I am. My amps are all Fender(deluxe, bassman, hot rod deluxe, and the like) and the guitar is awesome to play but I get high E drop out and they are WAY TOO HOT. Any help would be much appreciated. I am open for suggestions on this subject. Fat, Clear, and Twangy is what I am looking for.

Thanks again for all of your help,
Severen

Re: Need Phat Cat Help

i used a phat cat bridge for a while and i think they will twang enough, not like a tele, but still pretty good. Overall, my impression was that it sounded best playing in a rockabilly style, and under overdrive, it was some of the most articulate and smooth overdrive tones ive ever heard. I was really impressed by the clarity. From clean to overdriven, i thought it was a great pickup

Welcome to the Seymour Duncan User Group Forum Severen.

I have a Phat Cat set in a Les Paul. Dispite the difference in size and shape the Phat Cats really nail the P-90 tone and feel to my ears. If you like the tone and twang of P-90s the Phat Cats will definately work for you.

I saw John Fogerty (sp), the CCR dude playing a P-90 Goldtop on TV not too long ago and went downstairs and picked up my PC LP and sure enough, it nailed it. The mid position in particular has that classic mid notched P-90 tone.

Very country/rockabilly/50s sounding.

Thank you for the welcome and the great advice. I have never used a p-90 before but I LOVE single coil pickups and this explorer is the best guitar I have ever played. Thanks again Robert.

Re: Need Phat Cat Help

I echo the previous sentiments. I have a set of them in my Sheraton and they can definately do the country and classic rock sounds you're looking for. Another pickup I've been dying to try is the TV Jones TV'tron. It's basically a Gretsch Filter'tron in a humbucker sized housing. It's supposed to be really low in output, but it's said to nail the classic Gretsh sound.
