Need Recommendations for Swapping Out Dual Humbuckers in a Jazzmaster

Hi all,

Longtime listener, first time caller. I recently came into possession of a lovely HH Fender Jazzmaster--but the issue is I already have a LP, and if I'm going to justify keeping a second guitar, I'd like it to sound as different as possible from what I already have. So I'm trying to figure out if I should sell it and get a Classic Player Jag or JM, or swap out the pickups for something coil splitting or whatever.

I'm curious if people have recommendations for SD coil splitters that would offer the most tonal range and sound the *least* like a Gibson LP. Ideally something I could get reliably good surf rock out of, maybe country twang as a bonus if at all possible.

I've been looking at a '59 Custom Hybrid and the P-Rails, primarily.

So, questions (this is all new to me; I'm normally a just play-it-straight-as-it-came-out-of-the-box kinda person):
1. Can I pair a P-Rail at the neck with a '59 Custom for the bridge? Or should I go with double P-Rails, or something else?
2. Is this even worth it? Should I just sell it and try to get something with single coils?

Thanks!

You can get Rose Mozarts, which are wider alnico polepiece single coils much closer to Jazzmaster design than most. Roses are also affordable, made in the US, and Ken will custom tailor your pickups for little to no extra charge.

Other than that, you shouldn’t have much difficulty mixing Duncans with Duncans. If you really still want a humbucking mode, Stag Mag is a good choice. There’s a great country-ish sounding demo somewhere on YouTube.

Welcome to the forum!

The Hybrid with the P-Rails is really a great combo. If you don't have a pickguard, you could get a set of Triple Shot Rings and do the switching that way. I think if you like the guitar, you can absolutely get what you want by experimenting with pickups.
