Need Some Advice On A New Amp

Well I'm considering buying a new amp. Right now I have a Crate GT212 solid state combo and it's served me pretty well for the past few years but I'm getting into gigging now and I need something that sounds better and is a bit louder.

I recently got into an auto accident and made out with some cash so I was thinking around the 500-600 dollar range but I wasn't sure if this is enough.

I was thinking of a half stack but I don't know if that's enough cash for one. I'd rather get a used amp since they're cheaper and I don't have to baby it.

Give me some reccomendations!

Looking for something Tube or solid state?

A good tube amp head for less than 300 dollars is the Peavey Ultra 120. I own one it kicks serious ass, dont let the looks or name fool you.

As for a good cab, check Avatar.

There's one of the best budget rigs you could have.

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

I reccomend a used Marshall DSL401.

If you are trying one out and the OD sounds buzzy or trebly or harsh to you, roll that treble knob down. I run mine with the OD treble on zero and it sounds great.

If not, just buy something else. Used if possible.

Look at Traynor stuff - great sound and a great bang for the buck.

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

I've never really played a Marshall I've liked, everytime I think about one I think 80's **** rock.

I would like a tube head since I only hear awesome things about them. The band I'm in is a stoner metal type band (Melvins, Sleep, Sabbath) so that's pretty much the sounds I'm going for. I use a Big Muff on a clean channel.

I was thinking about looking for a Sunn Model T tube head, any words on it?

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

dude, for stoner rock on a budget, it's REAL hard to beat an ab165 bassman

i know that sounds a little silly, but those things seriously crunch like crazy, and if you roll back the treble, well yeah you know about rolling back the treble

you could get away with a 2x12 if you did an avatar with 2 eminence wizards. They're a much higher spl than what your bandmates probably use (i'm guessing g12t75's) so a 2x12 with them is, if i remember right, as loud as a 4x12 with g12t75's

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

Well it's just me on guitar and a bass player that pretty much plays guitar on bass, it sounds awesome.

I'll check out that bassman on eBay and ****, locally is pretty much out of the question, I have two music stores and one vintage store that just overprices everything.

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

Drew is right on the spot here. A bassman is a wicked amp for stoner(with a fuzz). Although a Sunn would totally tear it a new one if you could find one for the right price. I can't really comment on the Bassman 4x10 model. I don't know enough about it.

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

an ab165 could handle stoner without fuzz. I've done it before, it's sick

about the bassman 10's... I've played them, and they're not bad, they have a **** TON of bass response. However, i'd go with a head

you could go with a silverface if you goose it with like a ds-1 or ts or that big muff you got. You'll also have to load the preamp with electro harmonix 12ax7's or GT 12ax7c's, even in the phase inverter.

here's some ebay ones that you could do

http://cgi.ebay.com/FENDER-BASSMAN-...yZ121157QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
(peavey tubes in this one, gross, but it's cheap)

http://cgi.ebay.com/1967-Fender-Bas...409695042QQcategoryZ38074QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

i couldn't find any ab165's, which is suprising, but they're late 60's blackfaces, 50 watts, so, that tells you what to look for

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

Errr what kind of music do you play again?

As far as the fuzz goes, depends on what kind of 'stoner' tone he is after. I agree that they sound amazing without the fuzz, but he said he is currently using a big muff so I assumed he was going to be using it on his new amp.

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

i play rockabilly mainly

but i can throw down some stoner rock (greenleaf, clutch, wolfmother, ect.) if need be

I'd say in a 2 hour guitar session, 45% would be rockabilly, 35% stoner rock, 15% psychobilly, and 5% blues

Stoner Rock, www.stonerrock.com Check that out for a bit of insight.

That name is too similar to acid rock and yet I saw not one mention of Jimi or Country Joe or any of the other quintessential acid rock bands.

Also, I don't know what that stuff sounds like, but the palomino v16 had some nice distortion, good mojo. You should play around some stores, see if a production amp might be good.

Vintage is nice too, but it will probably need a tune up and won't have any warranty. Don't get me wrong, I love vintage stuff. But in the end, I digress because I don't actually know what you play, lol.

that's basically what he plays

real thick crunchy minor pentatonic ****

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

I think I may just buy a good cabinet, my band mate has that exact Bassman 50 head so I can just borrow it for shows and such.

Any good reccomendations for a good cab?

Re: Need Some Advice On A New Amp

avatar, either an X of eminence governors & wizards or governor's & swamp thangs. Swamps will have way more bottom end, wizards will give you more of a modernized 70's tone

keep in mind it's a 4 ohm head, so you'll need a 4 ohm cab, and when you buy a head, it'll hafta be able to do 4 ohms, which shouldn't be a big deal, i know most marshalls & peaveys have impedance switches
