Need some feedback on coverd vs non covered pups.

:arms: :arms: I am getting really excited my pups are supposed to be in this friday. I have a TB-4 for the bridge and a SH-2n for the neck and a STK-S2 hot stack for the middle. But, I was wondering, these are not covered and if I put covers on them would it change the tone? I am not really sure what covering them gives you? Does it allow more signal to the pup or just protect the pup and look great? I am new to this so I dont want to go to far to fast. I am still looking for my persoanl tone and I think I found it but I will experiment some more. I just dont want to affect the pups when it comes to covered vs un-covered. BTW I play through a Spider II amp and use a DG-Stomp for for the fun of it. Any thoughts from you folks would be greatly appreciated. BTW I play the gamut from classic rock to heavy metal to cat stevens yes I am old. HEHEHEHE but I love the music of all styles.

Most guys I know who use covers use them because they like the way they look...more finished I guess. But there is a diff in tone too. Most feel that the uncovered humbucker has a tiny bit more treble and more of a rock tone as opposed to a mellow jazz tone. Lew

Re: Need some feedback on coverd vs non covered pups.

Putting covers on a pickup places a barrier between the magnetic field coming up from the polepieces and the strings... mainly with the studs since they are under the cover. This will mellow out the pickup slightly diminishing the sense of "attack"... you may experience slightly more sustain since the magnetic field will have less "pull" on the strings...
On the negative side, a cover can be michrophonic under HIGH GAIN/VOLUME situations unless it is potted extremely well... don't forget about the added sheilding from electrical noise that a cover provides!
Hope this helps as well!
