Sen Ash, perhaps?

Re: Need some help identifying this wood...

Yup..Sen wood..aka Japanese Ash...even though it is not an ash tree. Just looks similar with the tight V face grain.

Re: Need some help identifying this wood...

Alder is my guess, since its open, varies in tightness, and its in a Jackson

Looks like Ash.

Guys who are saying sen ash... how do you tell the difference? Just the V pattern?

Re: Need some help identifying this wood...

The Japanese stuff has a characteristic look of its own. It particularly like transparent yellow finishes. Older members will remember Aria, Westone, some Ibanez/Greco/Roland and other early Eighties instruments made using this timber.

Looks like ash to me. As far as breaking it down farther than that I can't help.

The guitar looks nice to me but the important question is, how does it sound to you?

Re: Need some help identifying this wood...

So what are the tonal properties of Sen-Ash?

It's pretty light and soft, more like basswood than real ash. It's not bad though, just different.

Edit: working with it seems a lot like working with pine, I've never had a pine bodied guitar, so I can't compare, but that might be a better comparison.

Right setup, right pickups, it will sound great.

Which Dinky is it? Not many models have been made with transparent yellow finishes that would tell definitively which wood it is. From what I can see its an older "Professional" series which would make it Sen ash.

I don't see a reason which this shouldn't be ash. There is a tint in the clear coat that makes it more brown than normal.
