Need Strat pickup recommendations

I have Surfers in the neck and middle positions in my Strat....they are too bassy and dark for this particular guitar....any thoughts on replacements that are not high output?

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

ssl1 is brighter than the surfers and cheaper too! i actually prefer ssl2 for flat poles. if you want something besides a duncan, lindy fralin vintage hots are great. if you want even brighter you can get a 5% under wind

Thanks, Jeremy....I have been fighting putting bridge pickups in this strat....when it has been the Surfers that are just
too dark. I might sell the Surfers and get the SSL-1s. Does the SSL-1 have less low end than the Surfer? I miss the snap in the low strings.

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

i think the surfer is darker and less snappy all around than the ssl1. i love my surfers but they are in a light alder, maple neck, hard tail strat i made.

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

SSL-1s (or ssl-2s) are great pickups - particularly the neck and middle. They are just no longer the flavour of the month since all the smaller more expensive operations started doing their own versions of the ideal strat pickup.

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

the ssl5 tap is going to be brighter than an ssl1 even in the same position

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

I don't use the tap much. When I use it with the middle surfer it doesn't have much quack....the low end of the Surfer, or maybe lack of top end. When I use the middle and neck together...same thing...kind of muddy..lack of definition. Might try an ssl-1....What are the Fender 69's like?

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

strong bottom, pulled back mids, bright clear top

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

I think the ssl-1 will probably work....might check outcthe Fralin's....never tried them before.

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

fralin makes great pups and if you are worried about things being too dark the 5% underwind is beautifully clean and pretty. i do love my surfers though, other than the vintage stagger. i have the bass side lower than the treble by a decent bit but its pretty balanced sounding to me

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

Thanks, Jeremy. The amp has a lot of low end that is difficult to dial out, which is a part of the problem.

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

One of my surfers read 6.9K on my multimeter while disconnected to the guitar. I might try to put a .047 cap on them and see if it helps....if not, a couple of ssl-1s are in my near future.

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

a buddy does that with his les paul neck pups, it does shave some bottom off for sure. 6.9k is pretty beefy for a surfer but im sure some people would love that pup!

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

Yes, keep in touch if you sell... :)

I sure will...pretty sure I am going to gut the guitar and get all new pups.....ssl-1s and not sure of a bridge pickup yet...something with more bottom than an ssl-5. It will be a week or so before I can make it happen.

Re: Need Strat pickup recommendations

I found the duncan offerings were all a bit on the dark and full side. I went and bought some Fender Fat 50's which replaced the surfers in a strat I had a while back. Even those, which are on the beefy side for Fender, had much more chime and the 'authentic strat sound' to my ear. I see the Duncans like Frusciante's tone from much later Chili's........thick and slightly flat. I don't mean this in a derogatory way, just that they seem not to have the bounce I like.

One of the best pickups I have is a Refin set from Zhangbucker. I'd also put D. Allen tru 62 up there, and BKP Apache as well.
