Need Strat pup advice for Mex Strat

I have a Mex Start (1996) which plays great but the pups are a bit ragged sounding to me. They are hotter than your average Strat which is fine but I played a Start with Alnico Pro IIs and liked that sound (more bass than the Mex).
What are the SSL-5 pups like? Thanks. - Rob McFee

SSL5s are referred to as the SRV tone with .009 gauge strings...These pickups have more mids,more output,and almost are too dark and lack jangle in the wrong guitar...My first choice in your situation would be the Antiquity Texas Hots or talk to lew about the Antiquity Surfer pickups he's using currently...If you desire correct vintage like strat tones and can't spend the money on Antiquities,take a look at the SSL1 or APS1 single coils...
