I have to learn this Mathew Sweet song this week and am going ro sit down tonight to get started. This is a song I am really excited about playing. Has anyone ever played this song in a cover band? Hopefully I can figure out the chord changes and then start finding the scales for the solos. There are a lot of leads in this song, LOL.

I remember that song. I always liked it. I never tried to learn it, but I doubt it should be too hard to learn.

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

Thanks man, it is pretty much B - F# and E and then E - F# - B for much of the song, but I need to find the leads parts.

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

I want to say it's F# Dorian, in either 9th or 14th position but it always throws me off along the way. Love that song.

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

Looks like the song is in the key of B. What are the scales in the key of B?

Sounds about right, which would make the F# Dorian work... give it a try and see how it goes. Your ear will steer you in the right direction once you have the general idea for key/scales to use.

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

I don't understand modes so i will just try some F# scales. :)

I believe the bridge solo and ending solos are all in the same key or scale. I can't seem to find it. Main rhythm is B - F# - E so I believe the key is B.

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

What is an F# minor scale? Is that just taking an F# scale and flatting all the thirds?

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

It's the relative minor to A major. It has all the same notes. In terms of intervals though, a minor (or Aeolian mode of a major scale) is 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7.

That's a great song. I haven't heard it in years, and yet still know the entire song. Good old Matthew Sweet!

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

The solo is causing me fits. I need to lock myself in a room and figure it out.

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

Can't figure it out.:(
I think part of the problem is Lyme disease and Babesiosis did some damage to my eyes and ears. I have vision issues and hearing issue, thing don't always sound correct, in tune, etc, and I get a lot of ringing in my ears and learning music by ear has become more difficult. I wish I could find a Matthew Sweet music book, sheet music or tab.

I looked for offical Matthew Sweet sheet music online. Every place that sells Matthew Sweet music, says chords only, no leads!!!! WTF?

I might have to mention to the band we may have to skip this song and they won't be happy. :(

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

This is what I found, a friend helpd me!

The chords that he solos over are C, G, and F (tuned down 1/2 step to Eb).
The first solo is in C major blues (otherwise know as your standard A blues box pattern starting at the 5th fret...you know, 1,4 1,3 1,3 1,3 1,4 1,4).
The second or main solo is off the C blues box pattern starting at the 8th fret.

You can mix and match these scales as you see fit. It's all ear and feel. You'll know what's right for you.

To sum it up, when soloing to major chords you can use the blues scale off the root of the first chord or 3 frets back from the root (first chord).

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

I pretty much figured out all the solos but the main solo in the middle of the song over the bridge threw me off because it is in a different key.

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

Is it strange the one solo is in a different key?

If you use a minor scale over a major progression, the 3rd can sound out of place unless you bend/slide when you get to it. Otherwise I can feel out of whack and unresolved. As for three frets back, that's the relative minor. The if you take the 6th of a major scale and make a minor scale from that root it will have all the same notes, and will work. (example - Cmaj & Am)

Re: Need to learn Sick of Myself by Mathew Sweet in a hurry.

But is it odd that the intro solo and first fill solo after the first chorus are in key and then the bridge solo is in another key? The scale he is using over the solo won't fit the rest of the song. Took me a while to find how to play the bridge solo because it is out.

Pretty sure they're just in various positions. When playing along, some parts I hear in G# Aeolian (minor) and others hit C# Dorian, etc. They're essentially all the same notes. Keep at it. You'll get there!
