need wiring help-check my schem

I,m about ready to wire up my first project. I have come up with the layout that I want but, I am a little confused about shielding and how to run the grounds.

This layout has 3 single coil pups. The neck and bridge are wired like a tele with a 4-way switch for parallel/series combinations. The neck pup will be controlled with a push-pull switch on the tone control.

Should I run the grounds in a coventional way or can they be wired in a way similar to the Guitarnuts example with star grounding? The cavities will be shielded with copper foil tape. Thanks, RD.

Hey Rob; I'm looking this over, and its a bit unconventional - not that there's anything wrong with that. :laugh2:

The way you have your schematic layed out, where are the "common" terminals of the 4-way? Relative to left and right sides, are they top or bottom lugs? One top, one bottom?

Just curious.

It's a standard fender 4-way switch. I got part of this layout from guitarelectronics web site. I just like the idea of wiring like a tele with a middle pup I can add or subtract.

The reason I ask is, on Fender 3-way/4-way/5-way lever switches, the "common" terminals are on opposite sides of either end. You have your "output", (out to the volume control), taken from the middle lug of one side. That lug is shorted to the terminal thats beside it, so you'ld only have sound in two positions of the switch. And, of course, that can't be correct. ;)

Artie, the commons are at opposite ends and sides like you said. That is how it's wired on the web site. i have the switch in front of me and I don't see how it would work either. I just copied what I saw. How would you lay this out? I still like the middle on/off thing. RD.

Rob; Can you supply a link to the original schematic? Something doesn't seem right here.

I'll also look that over closer. Sometimes I come up with weird diagrams. Maybe someone else did too. :laugh2:

Ok, you definitely copied it right. But that just doesn't make sense. Let me cogitate on this awhile, and I'll get back to you.

Edit: Hmmm . . . they refer to this as a 4-way "mod" switch. I'm guessing that this is something slightly different than a standard 4-way.

I'll do some research and see what I can come up with. Regardless of the switch configuration, I can show you how to wire that up witha standard switch also.

Tomorrow . . . I have a new pup to play with. :laugh2:

Sorry 'bout that Rob. I've wasted some of your time for no reason. I should've known that the folks at GuitarElectronics wouldn't publish something that didn't work. Ironically, its the exact same thing I came up with once for someone else, just my 4-way is upside down from what they show:

It threw me for a loop because I didn't see their connection to the neck hot wire. Thats what allows it to work.

Artie, What are the switch positions for your sketch? The schem I posted has them like this (I think): 1.bridge 2.bridge and neck parallel 3. neck 4. bridge and neck series

BlueGuitar is Steve Aloha, one of our forum bro's. All three of those diagrams are essentially the same. On mine, the darker colored squares are the two "common" terminals on the switch. You can spot them by the fact that they're a bit longer than the others, and extend farther into the switch.

Really, the one one Steve's site is one of the easiest to follow. He's got it layed out real nice. It would be hard to make a mistake using his.

One last question (for now). Can all of the grounds be strung together and then attatched to the vol pot with one wire? Rob.

Sure, but make sure that ultimately, they all end up at the sleeve of the output jack. Thats the only true ground on a guitar.

Thanks again. I'm spraying the clear coats now. Then assembly, wiring, and finally playing it. I'll post some pics when it's done. Can you say double cut tele? hehehe...Rob.

enjoy ... is that wiring alot like brent mason's tele? ... being able to bring the middle pickup in (parallel) to whatever you have the neck/bridge combo set to is killer ... will your middle pup have it's own volume and/or tone control? .. you could do that by using two stacked concentric pots ... one stack could be tone/volume for the neck+bridge combo and the other stack could be volume / tone for the middle ... this way, you could roll-off the neck+bridge volume and get mid by itself if you want ...

This is easy.

1) Leave your 4-way switch as-is for the Tele wiring.
2) Put in push/pull pot (or plain old switch if you don't mind giving up a pot or drilling another hole in the pickguard) and wire it to pop the middle pu in and out.
