Need wiring options opinions.

I took my HSS Peavey Genny to work to swap the Stag Mag out for the vintage JB that I "found". I'm going to do the work over lunch break.

I'm going to replace the volume and tone with push/pull's. I'm going to use the volume P/P to tap the QP's. But on the tone P/P, I can't make up my mind what to do, and could use some opinions.

The obvious choice might be to split the JB, but I thought it might also be cool to run the QP's in series. Anybody have any thoughts on which of these two would yield the more desirable "tone"?

Also, I should add, I'm wiring the 5-way up in an unusual manner. If I select the "series" option, I'll be able to have all three pups on at once. (QP's in series, with the JB in parallel.) If I split the JB, I won't have that option.

Thanks all. (Lunch break is fast approaching.) :laugh2:

Wow, Artie asking for wiring advice!, I never thought I'd see it!

I am tempted to say the QP in series, as the all 3 could be quite a good option.

Re: Need wiring options opinions.

You have no idea how close I came to logging on under an alias to ask this question. :laugh2:

Actually, I know how to wire it up, just not sure what to wire up. ;)

I'm leaning towards the QP's in series also.
(Anyone ever split a JB? How's it sound?)

Re: Need wiring options opinions.

I'd use the tone to split or parallel the JB.

Or I'd do an experiment and use the switch to change the tone cap from the 50's mod to stock wiring and see which you like better.

Or to try the experiment I did and use the switch to see if you can hear a diff between an Orange Drop and a disc cap.

Or: use the switch to change from two differant values of tone caps (.02 vs. .01 for example) and see which you prefer.

I'm not losing any sleep . . . I'm at work. :laugh2:

Good ideas Lew. The beauty of the Tele is that it only takes two screws to lift the whole control plate out, without having to disassemble the guitar. So whatever I decide, I can easily change it later.

Its a darn shame. I asked for opinions, then ignored the one from the person who's opinion I value most. :smack:

Now I have to tear the Genny back apart and undo the not-so-useful QP-in-series option, and use that switch to parallel the JB.

I'll learn.

Re: Need wiring options opinions.

I suppose you gotta try these things...

I'll be interested to see how the JB sounds parallel, as I'm gonna be putting two mini on/on switches on my JB & Jazz for individual series/parallel.

Re: Need wiring options opinions.

Actually, I suspect that the series option might have some value if I was playing gigs using a bonafide tube amp. You could have the gain set to just below tube breakup, then hit the series switch and drive the tubes into distortion. It could be a real nice affect.

But with the modeller, it just isn't working. I'll get it rewired either today or tomorrow, then post clips. ;)
