I'm thinking about buying one of these since GC has them on sale for $29.95 this weekend. Of those of you that have had experience with one of these, what are your opinions?

The local liquor store has Jack Daniels on sale for $29.95 as well.

...it will be one or the other!

Jack Daniels will help you get through this weekend alot easier

They both might give you a head ache.

Actually the Govner isn't too bad through the right amp, I tend to associate it with Gary Moore.

So it does have a British flavor to it? Excellent! Would you describe the mids as "present" or "hollow"?

It's more of an overdrive, and it's pretty smooth. I used to use one as my main dirt box for many years through a JCM800.

Though, that was before I really got into the "tone" thing.

So, it's more along the line of a TS-10 or a SD-1 as far as "dirt level" goes. I have both of these and alternate between the two depending on which one I like on a particular day. I was hoping for something around the dirt level of my MT-2, but a lot smoother, particularly in the mids.

Re: needed: opinions on Marshall's Guv'nor +

I had one several years back, and used it through a Hiwatt, and an older Fender Bassman. I had various Celestion spkrs for the amps. I was able to get a decent OD from it, but my experience was that it coloured the sound too much. Even if I'm going to leave it on all the time, I prefer the pedal not to change my amp's sound as much as it did.

Re: needed: opinions on Marshall's Guv'nor +

I don't think it can quite get to MT-2 dirt levels, but it's got a pretty tweakable EQ on it.

Re: needed: opinions on Marshall's Guv'nor +

I liked the one I had versitile. Could be used on its own or to push a tube amp. I liked the variety of tone knobs. I only sold mine as a group of many things to finance and amp

How would you describe the colour it added? I trying to stay away from anything that might have a "nasal" character to it.

it was my main pedal for a year and a half & I think I regret selling it to be honest.

I wouldn't say it was "nasal". If I recall correctly, it gave my amps sort of a generic Marshall sound. That isn't neccesarily a bad thing for everyone, but I liked the basic sound of the amps I mentioned, and ended up going for something more transparent.

that's good information! I run the gain on my MT-2 at approximately 10:00 oclock so I can preserve some of the dynamics...not looking for saturation in the Guv'nor, just some British flavor with smoother mids.

Also good to know! I'm kinda tough to dial in so versatility is a must.

That sold me...my amp gives me all the "bounce" I need...I'm just looking for a generic Marshall sound to build on.

GC has it online for the same price...reclaim your former prize! All for the same price of about 6 trips to Starbucks!

It definitely has more gain than an "overdrive". The new silver Guv'nors have wee bit more gain the the original black ones and the EQ is very comprehensive. I have both and prefer the black as its a bit smoother but its a subtle difference. I run mine through my Marshall heads for gain. I prefer my Fulldrive II, Reverend II, or tubescreamer for the fender amps.
