Needin' advice on a Fender amp...

I've got a late 60's Super Reverb which I'm trying to sweeten up. The amp stays pretty focused at high volumes, and doesn't break up much. I want to get more breakup out of it. I understand that these amps are kinda notorious for this characteristic. Here's what's inside: new JJ 6L6's, new JJ hi-gain 12ax7's, new filter caps, while the rest is all original stuff. Any suggestions to remedy this situation? All advice is appreciated.

Re: Needin' advice on a Fender amp...

You can make some changes to the circuit. Tell your tech to double or triple the value of the negative feedback resistor. This will cause a decrease of negative feedback and loosen up the amp.

If your tech is knowledable, the reverb recovery circuit can be tweaked to allow for a little more gain there too. There's a 3.3M resistor and cap and that resistor can be changed to 2.2M and the value of the cap experimented with.

In my '74 Super I replaced the .1 and .047 tone caps in the vibrato channel with either a pair of .02 Mallory 150 caps or Sprague Orange Drops...I forget which! But the result was a little more of a Marshall tonality.

In fact, all of my blackface and silverface Fenders have had all of the mods mentioned above.

You could also just ship the amp chassis only to my brother Bruce (http://www.missionamps.com) and he could rebuild it like my '74.

My '74 is now a better sounding amp than my '66 SR...but we had to do the mods mentioned plus a few more.

Also: Try removing the 12ax7 tube the furthest to the right looking at the back of the amp. That's the 12ax7 for the normal channel. Removing it will not hurt a thing but will give you a little more ooomph and distortion in the vibrato channel, though the normal channel will not work while the tube is out of the amp. Some like it....some don't.
