Neo-prog demo song

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
** NEW SECTION ADDED ... NEW LINK BELOW **

Around Memorial day I had a chord progression that I would make an interesting base for a progressive rock song. Over the moths, I've toyed around with it a little here and there. The skeleton is now complete, and here it is. This is in no particular order, it's essentially a random selection of riffs and motifs in D Dorian. Eventually I would like to find musicians to jam on it and flesh the song out to it's 20-30 minute prog glory! :)

GUITAR is a Riff Raff/Stormy Monday loaded Agile Les Paul clone
BASS is a mid-60's Silvertone
DRUMS are Drumkit From Hell
TABLA is Samplebase Indian percussion VST
ORGAN AND ELECTRIC PIANO are the Cubase Halion synth
CELLO AND FRENCH HORN are Native Instruments Symphonic Orchestra VST
ANALOG SYNTHS are my Dave Smith MOPHO

wow, a lot going on there. a lot to process. lots of ideas! very wild.

with that riff in the middle, I'd have thought you would have resolved it in a different way (with a descending run).

if I may be so bold: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16938354/alternate.mp3 (either way, that's fun to play, hehe)

oh man that's great. I love the synth bits! I'm totally game if you want a little solo/lead thing somewhere.

Yeah, it's a lot of stuff jammed into a small space!

Ooo, nice! I love when ideas get inspired!

I will check this out when I get home from work tonight!

Well, shut my mouth!

I really like that! :)

Hmm, may see a change to that riff in the future! Thanks!

Man, you are entering a place of complete artistic liberation. I cannot wait to hear fully fleshed interpretation of this concept. Very cool, as an understatement.....

Thanks! Means a lot coming from a monster such as yourself!

Re: Neo-prog demo song

i jammed on this the other day. it inspired a whole bunch of gilmour-esque stuff. lotsa fun :)

Re: Neo-prog demo song

Funny you mention Animals...I actually think that what you have there is the truncated start of a full album's worth of stuff...

Re: Neo-prog demo song

So, I was very content with the sound of this skeleton; like the riffs, lots of room for expansion, plenty of interesting ideas. Put it to bed, posted a mess of online ads to muster up some musicians ...

... and then I heard Procol Harum's In Held 'Twas I. I thought the song was so-so, until it got to the final section, Grand Finale -- that just totally blew me a way. And, of course, inspired me to write another section for the song. My interpretation is less Bach-influenced and a bit more 20th Century composition, but I had a lot of fun placing layer on top of layer.

I have updated the link in the OP, feel free to skip to the 10 minute mark if you only want to hear the new bit.

Thanks for listening!
