Neodymium magnet pickups

Neodymium magnets are being used more often in high end speakers maybe they would make good guitar pickup magnets. What da ya think, huh?

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

Q-tuners are interesting. Have a pair of the v1.

tried neos in a distortion once. Don't, just don't. Painful. Like seriously hurt at relatively low volume clean.

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

Yep and there is an Alnico 2 version as well.
I have the Strat and Tele version of the Neodynium...
My CS Tele sounds very good with them...took me some time to get the most out of them, but from the start I could tell that this would be a good setup for the Tele.
The Strat ones are residing in an old Ibanez project(I'm missing a neck)

Neodymium magnet pickups

GFS has a very interesting neodymium single coil that is supposed to be noiseless.

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

I had a pair of Entwistle HDN's...they were very clear & articulate (but kind of 'round' sounding). Did'nt particularly like or dislike them, but I did swap them out for something else..

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

I have both the Entwistle XS62N and the HDN which are neo pickups. They are bright, high output, have good definition and a strong clear tone

Did you do any tuning with capacitors and such?

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

If you were to use neodymium spacers, would they degauss a center magnet?

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

Always looking forwards. How about a double thick ceramic? Probably that too. Neos are just too strong.

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

I didn't try rare earth magnets.

One potential problem that comes to mind is volume and distance. You need a shape of the magnetic field that covers the strings well. You cannot make a rare earth magnetic bigger without making it very, very strong.

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

yeah you can use a capacitor in series to tame alter the output peak frequency on the Q-tuners and dial in the exact tone you want or add a rotary and add a few values you like and alter between them.
I have an early model with the coils split, with 4 leads, I am even thinking about a different cap value on each coil and shape the tone in a more dynamic way. That would still not affect the hum at all.

Here is some info on the old model although I know the new versions have different values it might be possible to get info from the manufacturer web page.

Lucidpickups
This company makes Q-tuners in the original style, and I think the company has one of the original designs of the Q-tuner with the pole pieces.
Here the are called "Clearbuckers" the also make neo pickups for acoustic guitars, they look pretty good if you want to capture every last drop of tone.

If your interested I would shoot them an email.

Re: Neodymium magnet pickups

Too strong for direct replacement

Unless maybe you use some tricks like Neo in hex/slug/rail and no magnet at all on the bottom?
