Does it cop the Seth Lover bridge tones in the mids and does it become warmer in the highs like the Seth?

I would like to know this as well.
On a side note. I've recently bought a set of Anniversary Seths with A5 mags.... kind of the opposite of your question of a '59 with an A2.
I'll report back once their installed.

It's creamy delicious fun. Haha. I liked it, but still missed the smooth deep mids, too PAFish. However, it was an improvement, IMHO, versus the A5. I like my tone smooth. I went with the 59/CC Hybrid, A2.

SD97... trust me... you will experiment then ultimately go back to the 59/Custom Hybrid... you will miss that extra uumph that it adds to the classic PAF tone! I use it without a tone pot connected... that load may be robbing some of the highs and transparency you are looking for...
I agree... the 59 with an A2 is almost exactly like a SETH... same wire... same resistance range... the only difference could be the wind pattern... the potting will affect the tone slightly.remingtonbo2001 said:

Hi Pete....I own 3 Hybrids and I plan on keeping at least 2....You may be right my friend? Guess we'll have to see what happens?

You mean the A2 adds in the mids and a losser tone....The A5 is brighter and tighter and the mids are ever so slightly scooped compared to the A2...:13:

Nobody knows for sure except the folks at Duncan but, I would almost put money on that there are a large number of Duncan neck pickups that use the same coils! (jazz, Full Shred, Invader, APH, for example) There may be a few more in there that I cant think of???? After all, Duncan has done this with bridge buckers (Custom, C5, CC) (JB, Distortion, Invader).Simon_F said:

Yes I've done it. Both the neck and the bridge. But I gotta confess that I tried them in my fat strat not the LP.
I agree with the above. Could not do a one to one comparison with the seths tho (when I was trying a2 59s I had sold my set of seths with the 01R8 they were in). But do not remember the seths being that different. The only thing is the transparent honk in the uppermids register that the seth bridge had. (But maybe it was the wood and not the pickup!) A2 59s in my fat strat didn't have it. But full strength a2 or a3 ants in the same guitar have it. That I know. I'd say they are very much like a a2p. Thick and smooth and overall great PAF clones.
That said I have to add that I love the same 59n with an a3 magnet (adds a little of that uppermid honk, and eq separation) and a dun-aged a2 magnet out of an antiquity. But then again, relatively speaking (to your tastes) I like brighter (but still non-icepicky) pickups. So I think you should try them, because I expect you to like them more than I did.
BTW my bridge 59 measures 8.75K and the neck 7.50K.

Hello Doc and thanks for posting....My 59N reads 7.8k and the bridge 59 reads 8.5k....I need to try the A2 magnet in my 59B since I thought the Seth had a beefier overall mid tone and a slightly rolled off highend....

I think the 59n with an Alnico 2, 3 or 4 would make a great neck pickup.
For a 59b, I'd try an Alnico 8.

What about a wax potted seth lover which is otherwise stock?
Btw, it would be nice to have a chart of the similarities between the construction of the different models.... the custom series is pretty straight forward. I know the JB and Distortion are pretty similar except for the magnet. I think the Screamin Deamon is just an overwound 59.
I didn't know that the alnico 2 pro and the Jazz were similar. I've never played with a Jazz neck, but the recordings of them have been overly bright and somewhat sterile to my ears. I had the opportunity to play around with an alnico 2 pro equipped les paul courtesy of a friend, and it had a really lush sound in the neck position. I know that an alnico 2 magnet will add in mids and more of a vintage vibe but I would never guess that the jazz and that a2p were the same pickup except for the magnet, I suspect there are greater differences between them. This is all speculation though.... I'd love to hear it from someone who knows.

They aren't the same pickup.
I've have A2n's and tried them with both the stock Alnico 2 and Alnico 5, and I've had a Jazz. If they were the same pickup, my "Alnico 5 Pro" would have sounded just like the Jazz (which has Alnico 5 mag) and it didn't. Not even close.
There's a whole lot more to a pickup than just magnet type and DC resistance. For one thing, the type of wind makes a HUGE difference.
My guess is that the Jazz is wound in very neat, symmetrical layers while the A2P is much more scatterwound.
