New Amp build (5e3), from scratch...

Well, I really got the building bug (so many pedals and now amps...damn).

My last 2 kits (first jcm 800 and then Hiwatt 6h50) went very well, the latter was fine from the first power-up and all so that was a big confidence booster.

While kits are a lot of fun and make for easier complex builds, the currency exchange rate and taxes have been making them really expensive lately and I can't afford buying those regularily.

Therefore, I decided to challenge myself otherwise: build amps from scratch by buying everything I possibly can locally (small town so that's still not a lot) or at least within Canada to keep the costs down.

I decided to start small with a 5e3 (kinda went backwards: first a 2204, then a Hiwatt and now a tweed deluxe). Found a very cool supply store in Toronto with tons of stuff that I couldn't find elsewhere and used a lot of what I had leftover from previous builds too. It'll be a combo and all the wood necessary's gonna be from my dad's shop, locally sourced (most of it was cut by me) and all. I already have a nice US-voiced speaker lying around (Emi Screaming Eagle) so all in all the cost should be around 300$ when all's said and done.

Got the chassis made from a local shop. Not cheap (although not that expensive either) but nice quality. They drilled the tubesocket holes for me and I took care of the rest (I'm not equipped to punch holes so some of them are a bit crude but it's all good):

Today I finally found time to assemble some of it (kids have been sick and I'm working on about 10 different things at the moment, including recording music, doing work on a few of my guitars, etc), it's finally starting to look like an amp:

Nice Hammond iron there. I'll point out that any fellow canuck that needs electronics supplies should look at a1parts.ca. Great prices (really great), amazing service. I have no affiliation with them but for once there's a great store that ships around Canada and the US and has great inventory and prices so you know I have to mention them. As I said, they ship to the US too but since you guys have easy access to mouser and those guys...

No soldering done so far but that's next...

Cheers!

Looks killer. I REALLY want a Deluxe, too; but my last 2-years' tax return toy-shopping have gone into gear for mixing and building my synths up. (Probably the most expensive part in shifting from being in a band to going solo)

$300 Canadian is a terrific price for an amp! My last distortion pedal cost that much! :)

Thanks... for 300$ you have to consider that I don't pay myself, have a speaker already, don't need to buy wood and have some wire and stuff leftover. Still, that's the whole point: get it as cheap as possible and as DIY as possible.

I wish I had the time to learn to do what you do... still, as long as I'm learning I'm good!

Subscribed for awesomeness.

Ha, well I hope I deliver... ;)

Should be another excellent build and amp!

I'm hoping it'll be really cool too!

If you do not mind me asking.....could you briefly (or in detail if you want :)) describe your process for cutting the IEC square.?
THAT always gives me trouble. I bought a "nibbler" just for that.....but I confess, I still Have Not used it.
Thank You

Ah well I struggled with it too to be honest. I traced out my square, drilled a bunch of small (1/8" I think) holes around the periphery, finished the cutting with a dremel tool and then finished the sides with a file. It's the worst thing on the whole chassis so far bu easily concealed as you can see (although pictures weren't taken from close enough) and on a combo it'll be facing down so it will rarely be seen so no biggie.

There you have it, basic macguyver-ish bastard method but it worked ok...

Thanks for the store name, I'll have to check them out!

FWIW, I've had pretty good luck using a stepper drill to punch holes in aluminum chassis for pedals with these cheap bits from amazon: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B001OEPYWK/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2/176-7202434-9781045?pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_r=14MZ0ZSRRAAQRJD275JZ&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=1977604522&pf_rd_i=B000FZ2UOY

No problem for the store.

As for the step-drill bits: I've been using those for about 2 years for pedals. Definite time-savers and the holes just come out better than with a standard bit as well. Been using mine on amp chassis as well (such as this one). The only problem I had, to which zz was referring to, is the square holes, such as the IEC socket...

5E3's are great, Surgeon is great, this build is great, and I'm feeling just great about the whole thing!

Whoop. That's what I get for not properly reading the thread. Big square holes do sound like a PITA.

Re: New Amp build (5e3), from scratch...

Use a Zener to bring today's voltages down to late 50's specs. Bruce at Mission taught me this trick. Makes a differ nice if you want a 5E3 that sounds like they did backing n the day.

Re: New Amp build (5e3), from scratch...

Thanks Scott, I've looked into it before and will keep it in mind for this build.

Re: New Amp build (5e3), from scratch...

Did a bit more today. Finished the labels on the face of the chassis. Did the heaters and tested them (working fine) and some tiny wiring around the pots and speaker jacks, which I'm afraid I drilled too high on the chassis, meaning they'll be close to the heaters, I might have to drill new holes lower and plug those up...

More to come!

Whole guts view at the moment:

Nice tight heaters (didn't want to do them suspended):

Face details (don't ask about the fish, I have no idea why...), also, the jacks are on the outside so I can wire them up more easily:
