New Amp Day

Finally acquired a Recto the other day. I've wanted one for a while, one popped up locally and I got it for a good price.
The amp is pretty near mint condition.
It's a Series 2 Single 50 with custom silver tolex. Not sure about the story there, but it actually looks really nice.
The amp sounds great, very dynamic, and a ridiculous amount of gain. The Modern mode is crazy. Lots of gain and volume. I'm running it in Vintage mode with the gain at 45% and boosting it with a Route 808 and sometimes an V4 OCD. I like the fat throaty tone of the vintage mode more than the modern.
It sounds great with all my cabs and all different speakers actually. The best being V30's and WGS R30's.
I'm finding that Rectos have their outstanding reputation for a reason. I've played them before, but never had the chance to really get in depth with one. It has a finicky but also fascinating eq section. Lovin it.

The amp has Mesa 5881's in it. Which I thought was kind of cool. I thought they came stock with regular 6L6's, and as far as I know these are the original tubes.
It also has a Mesa stamped JJ in V1 and the other 4 pre's are all the same tube which I can't identify.
Also, I paid $670 for it, which from what I'm seeing is below the current used market value(?) Especially considering it's a mint Series 2

Re: New Amp Day

That's a good deal and the tolex looks neat. Mesa Boogie supposedly makes a small variety of power tubes but the only ones I've ever seen are 6L6 and EL34. There's nothing like the growl of a Mesa Rectifier. Congratulations on an awesome score.

Damm, that would look and sound great on top of my 87 Jubilee straight cab, next to the Jubilee head/slant cab! That would be the silver rig from he11.

I am not trolling here, I swear - but is the clean channel anything to speak of / usable at all?

Re: New Amp Day

Thanks guys, I don't think I'm going to do a retube anytime soon. The amp just sounds so sweet and thick. I'm retubing my Avenger right now with Sovtek 5881's since they sounded so good in that amp before.
I have a few sets of EL34's that could try in the Recto, but I honestly don't really feel the need. I think I'm gravitating more towards the 6L6 sound now after years of playing EL34's.
I'm finding the little nuances with this amp as the days go on. Main thing being that it sounds best with the output dial higher than the channel master dial. The amp breathes better that way and keeps the preamp gain and high end in check.
It's very easy to make this amp sound too bassy, too fizzy and too hot. I actually figured it out and bonded with it faster than I thought I would.

That's exactly how I run my Triple Recto. I keep the master output at about 3 o clock and use the channel master to control the volume. If you don't it seems to choke the amp up and make it sound buzzy and a little harsh. I like how they compress setting them this way to. They compress either way, but using them this way, they seem a little more dynamic and articulate.
