i went out and bought myself a peavey 5150 a few days ago. i have it on a 4x12 cab with v30s and i can not get the distortion to sound tight, it just sounds so fuzzy. any tips on getting a good tight thrash metal tone out of one of these?

Re: new amp day

turn down the resonance, turn down the gain.

They can sound pretty tight, though it does take some tweaking.

Alternatively, if you want to use tons of gain, get a tube screamer of some sort and boost it with that. (then turn the resonance back up a bit for the OOMPH). You also might wanna think about a new set of power tubes.

I think v30s are real fizzy with that amp. Best bet is a new cab. Higher wattage speakers help. Other than that, it's hard to get rid of but presence down and scoop mids will help.

Re: new amp day

Those amps have a fixed bias and run pretty cold - just so Peavey doesn't have to keep sending out tubes for warranty.

I'd find a good cheap tech in your area who can install an internal bias pot, then bias it perfectly with 4 new JJ 6L6's. It'll make a big difference in the tightness and overall tone.

If your 5150 has a lot of years on it, the stock tubes are probably half shot. In that case, just get a quartet of power tubes like JJ's and pop them in. The final tweaking would be the addition of a bias pot, which you may not need if the amp comes to life.

how did it sound when you tried it out? and what did you play it through?

i agree with the tubescreamer and turning the gain down.

I am a big fan of using an eq pedal in the loop to help account for those trouble frequencies. I also agree on getting a bias trim pot installed to properly bias the amp. Speakers make a big difference too, so you might look into mixing some of those V30s with another speaker. I am a huge fan of the Celestion Classic Lead 80 as it is a big sounding speaker without any frequency that is overly offensive.

Good luck!
