Working with a forum bro on a Tremolux based Tweed. He got on my list prior to it closing again recently. The more I look at this circuit, the more I'm looking forward to building it.

Now the question remains, which version. There was a cathode-biased version and a fixed bias version. Both of them vary the tremolo via the bias.

Hmm.... which way to go.... gotta say, I've been rather taken as of late with the cathode bias versions of the last few tweeds that have come off the line.

5U4 rect, 2x6V6, 12" speaker... sounds like a plan. :chairfall

Oh yeah, time for a new Celtic name on this one. I dub thee, Treasa (Celtic for Strong)

Tweed Tremolux's are VERY cool amps...trust me, go with the cathode bias...and please don't forget the large (Pro size) cab...it's a MUST!

I wish I had known you were gonna do a tremolux...those are sweet amps!

Only "issue" with a Tremolux is that they are just not very loud...actually the ones I have tried are not even as loud as a Deluxe but man do they sound good!

Re: New Amp in the Works

I don't think I've ever played a cathode bias amp? It's easy to see the electronic difference looking at a schematic. Can someone clue me in on the sonic difference?

Re: New Amp in the Works

Doesn't a cathode allow you to go to the bathroom during surgery? :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: I'm usless when it comes to stuff like this! :6:

Re: New Amp in the Works

Re: New Amp in the Works

cathode bias really sings

i am more curious as to negative feedback ... one always hears guys go gaga over taking the negative feedback out .. question reamins, why is it ever put IN?

good luck with the new build .. i bet it'll slay!

cheers

You wouldn't want this type of cathode in your Weiner.:yell:

Re: New Amp in the Works

Cathode biased amps really have a natural singing quality when cranked, it's not for everybody but those of us that dig it really, really dig it!

As for the NFB...the oldest Fender amps didn't have any NFB and it was added to make the amps less raw and cleaner which was the order of the day. Since most guys today are looking for the amp to break up we also tend to like amps that have little or no NFB...

...

Sounds like this is for me. Sad to admit... I'm a 40 year old Tweed Virgin.:27:
I've never played a tweed amp or Cathode bias amp.:smack:

I"m actually thinking of building this with a bigger PT and slapping some 5881's in there. Keep the smaller PT? I dunno. I'll have to experiment a bit.

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

Sounds sweet Scott :bigthumb:

How about doing a head version...or a head version of the Vibrolux :D

Oh, and what happened to the Brenna? I didn't see it on the site :dunno:

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

The Brenna is alive and well. I've just not got it tweaked to the point (no time) that I"m ready to start offering it for sale. But, it wont' take long to finish what I want to do to it.

And a head of a Treasa would be easy to do, especially if I jammed it all into a JTM45 chassis.

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

this would be sweet. I love these amps, but like christian said, they just don't have much volume. I don't know how the changes would change the sound of he amp scott, but if you can squeeze some more volume out of the design without affecting the sound much, that would be cool

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

I'd say try the 5881's and a bigger PT/OT (like a 5C5 Pro) with a 12"...and tremolo. Seems like everybody with a 5E3 type amp is always trying to get it louder anyway. 20-25 watts in cathode bias 5881 is enough for small gigs, enough headroom for some cleans. Sounds like a great little amp...
