Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

I'd say try the 5881's and a bigger PT/OT (like a 5C5 Pro) with a 12"...and tremolo. Seems like everybody with a 5E3 type amp is always trying to get it louder anyway. 20-25 watts in cathode bias 5881 is enough for small gigs, enough headroom for some cleans. Sounds like a great little amp...

A 5C5 pro is still only about 20 watts, a stock Tremolux is about 18 anyway so really it wouldn't be much if any at all louder or cleaner. I think Scott was thinking maybe a later style power section but like I said IMO it would just kill the tone that comes with a Tremolux

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

I contend that if I popped a larger PT in it and 5881's and keep pretty much everything else the same, I'd get a louder version with all the magic. I'd keep the OT the same though.

I dunno. Might be worth the experiement. If it didn't work, I could always just build another Aislinn 6L6 out of it.

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

4x6V6 would be cool. I'd just have to find a bigger chassis to work with. that is do-able though. gotta have a half-power switch though.

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

If it helps anyone here, the person that is *paying* me to build this amp is wanting it to be a stock clone. The only real question is fixed (60) versus cathode (57-59) bias. But, if I really dig the tone of is and I'm betting I will, then there exists the possibility of a higher wattage version. (I might be slightly off on the years.)

I personally like the Cathode bias version but both are low enough wattage to crank and make sing!

If I were gonna buy a Tremolux clone I would want a straight up clone...the early, cathode biased but I would want the Pro size cab (the very first year came in a smaller cab).

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

I've played neither real mccoy. I definitely lean towards cathode-bias in tweed amps.

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

I'm with Jeff_H.

Could somebody speak English around here?????

Yo, Scott, are you still mainly building for the forum brethren, or have you branched out?

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

I've sold about half to forum bros, half to other guys off the net (gear page and harmony central).

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

:cool3: Maybe TGP will help get the word out.

You do great work, bro.

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

Thank you, but I gotta tell you I'm so busy I had to close off my waiting list again. I consider myself blessed.

Re: New Amp in the Works.... Just added a POLL!

I'm with Christian on this one. Make it a straight up clone with a larger cab. That sounds best to me. Lower wattage amps are great IMHO. Loud has it's place, but in this day and age loud is getting shelved for quiet.

BTW - What is the major difference between this circuit and the Silvertone 1482? Seems that they have some startling similarities. If they are too close, it could be an unpopular model.
