New Amp: Initial review (Carvin Nomad)

Ok. The Nomad arrived last Friday, and I got a chance to play through it over the weekend. This will be a brief review since I played it for less than an hour. I'll give it a better workout this weekend.

1. Very solidly built. Using hardwood ply vs particle board. The tweed (vinyl) covering is flawless and looks like actual tweed.

2. The Mid and Bass control for both channels are very responsive. Typically, I have the Mid and Bass full up with the Treble at about 12:00 or 1:00. For this amp, I had to roll back the Bass and Mid (slightly).

3. Cleans are really nice on this amp (I played through a Strat, but I'll use the LP this weekend). Very articulate, especially for chords. Even at lower volumes, single notes sustain nicely.

4. The Drive channel: I'm used to El84's with the Crate VC5212. Both the Carvin and Crate have nice creamy distortion, no fizz at all. I didn't crank it up too much, but setting the Soak (gain) knob to around 6 gets a real nice fat distortion. Pushing it closer to max makes it a little too distorted for my tastes. I'm guessing that setting the Soak at 6 and jacking up the level will give me exactly what I'm looking for in an amp.

5. The amp is plenty loud, even at less than half volume. So I should have no problem gigging with it. It's equally as loud as the Crate with 2X12's. I'll have to A/B them to see what differences I'll find with only one speaker.

Anyway. That's it for now. I'll add more later like I said earlier.

Re: New Amp: Initial review (Carvin Nomad)

I have the Belair
its the 2x12 version of yours

I have had it since 2000

I swapped tubes to Ruby's
and tweaked the bias up a bit
it comes from the factory at a nice 70 ma I think

I bumped mine up to 77

the amp went from well behaved to a bit snarley
it has a personality now

the cleans are nice fendery
there is a mod that will make the drive a bit more Marshally

there was a guy selling kits and instructions for the mod

I think he was doing the mod at one point but doesnt have time right now

I will see it I can find the link

Re: New Amp: Initial review (Carvin Nomad)

Thanks. I appreciate the info. I'm going to play it a bit & then decide what it might need. I recently re-tubed the Crate with Ruby Tubes, and it really made a difference.

Re: New Amp: Initial review (Carvin Nomad)

didnt mean it sounded bad

I just came to the point where it needed new tubes
3 years ago

i loved it for 10 years before the tweak

just pointing out the tweak

No worries. I appreciate the info. I've tweaked the Crate do many times, because I love to tinker. So far I love the Carvin, but I'm sure I'll start tinkering. The info you gave is real helpful.

From what I've heard about the Nomad and Belair, seems like you could pick up a good dirt pedal and never worry about the soak channel, those cleans are so wonderful. So jealous.

That's a good idea. I picked up a Wampler Plexidrive recently. I'll give it a try

Congrats man and I told you so on that amp being COOL!!
I have owned several and may buy another one in the near future.
The guy who is really the mod go to guy on those amps is Richard -- lets see if I can remember the spelling of his last name here I think it's spelled Hasselback. I know Rick well and yep his mods take those amps to a whole other level!

Thanks! I think I've seen his Youtube on modding the Nomad & Belair. I'm going to play it for a while, then consider mods. If you're thinking of getting one again, the Nomad is on sale w/foot switch for $449

Ok. I played the Les Paul through the Nomad over the weekend. Amazing amp. Sustains really well on both channels. Plenty loud even at less than 1/2 volume. Both channels bring out the best in the Antiquities I have in the LP. I wish I had gotten one if these years ago. Can't wait to play out and really see what it can do.

Ascension, Isnt Hasserel (SP?) the amp guru over there?

Congrats on the new amp Jeffrec!

That's the guy. He had TONS of write ups on that amp. Much like Justin Holton with the Fender Hot Rod amps.

Re: New Amp: Initial review (Carvin Nomad)

Mesa Boogie used to make an amp called the Nomad. I'm confused...?

Re: New Amp: Initial review (Carvin Nomad)

Here it is, although my understanding is they don't make it any more (I think this is an old link). I was just wondering if there was some connection between the amps, somehow but probably it's just the name.

I remember the Nomad as well, but I don't think there's any similarities. The Carvin is el84 powered and sort of in between a Fender and Vox I expect. A lot of people say its a rich tone, and since it uses so many little power tubes, its got a lot of character in its tone. All I know is I want one pretty badly.
