In this budget, save some more money and get a new Peavey Vypyr Tube. Those amps are hybrid, with tube power amps, and a half and half tube/ss preamp. So it's mostly tube, but the distortion is all ss. The amp works great for practicing; it's all I use in my bedroom and with my buddies. It does metal sounds great, as well as others. It singlehandedly eliminated my GAS. I HIGHLY recommend it!
