new amp

walked into a music store yesterday just to check it out the tele's, walked out with a used CRATE VC 30, for $250 including footswitch, cover, and all original documents. Perfect condition, all original parts, no flaws. Blonde w/ brown grill?

Its a great sound, exactly what im looking for. It smoked the Peavey classic 30, and it was the best all tube combo i cuold get for my money (under 450). I have 200 left over to mess around w/ tubes and possibly a speaker, though the guy at the shop said to leave it unless i was gonna replace it with an alnico, becayse otherwise it wasnt that much better?

what tubes do i get now? JJ's? go for clean headroom. it has the stock sovteks in it.

ill have to figure out a way to record it, maybe get a cheap mike or something. I highly recomend this amp though. its a great amp. while it doesnt ahve marshall gain or fender clean, it comes darn close and sounds better than alot of more expensive amps. Mines a 1X12 combo, 2 channel, seperate reverb which is nice, fx loop. it does break up early, but i havent really cranked it yet. i was told its based on an AC30, but its not handwired or fancy like that.

CONGRATS BRO...NEW STUFF IS FUN!!!!

EL84s or EL34s ? I'm told the Svetlana 6L6 combined with JJ 12AX7s is a sweet mix. I've only got my UniValve...got some Svets but need some JJs to see for myself.

Enjoy your new amp!!!

Re: new amp

Man those crates are kick ass I love them I've played the 30 and the 5. Man I didn't know you didn't have to carry over 50lbs for great tube tone, even the 5 rocks. I never got a chance to play any of those peavey classics although I heard they're great, what I really want to try is one of those XXX's and believe it or not I've never done the 5150 either.

Re: new amp

ok ok, it doesnt smoke the classic 30, but I.M.O. it does beat the classic 30. i didnt like the overall tone of the 30 as much, it just wasn't what i was looking for. the gain channel i also didnt like.

the classic 30 came close to what i was looking for, the VC 30 even closer, which is why i took home the VC.

peavey makes great stuff, it just doesnt suit my tastes.
