New Custom Shop Day!

Clint 55

OH THE DOUBLE THICK GLAZE!
12k Phat Cat bridge with A6 and A8. It's epic! It's not compressed at all, just pure roundness and clarity. Meters 11.66k.

The middle is an A5/A6 stock bridge that meters 8.61k.

They're nice and quiet from the grounded covers.

Thats pretty different, in a good way! Just curious, what made you decide on that magnet combination?

Re: New Custom Shop Day!

Thx guys! I chose the mags for several reasons. 1st, I realized that I do like mixed mags for P90s after spending time with stock A2s, A5s, and then mixed. I realized it's not just a novelty, it's kind of like a hybrid hb. 2nd, I realized that I prefer oriented mags to unoriented mags. I don't care for the unoriented mags as much because they make the sound more vintage than I want and jingle jangles are what I'm trying to get away from. 3rd, A6 is my shizzz!! To me, it's the most balanced mag there is. Like A5 but with mids and a little less treble. I don't get why it's underrated. So I thought I would try a common bridge mag with it - A8. It worked out as expected, pretty round since each mag isn't overly trebly, but also a nice touch of grind from the A8. Another combo I could try would be A6/A9. I think I'll keep it how it is tho.

Also, I tested the PCs for noise against my humbuckers and they do not allow any more noise than the humbuckers. Even with distortion! Since the cover, screws and baseplate are grounded. Now that's a good single coil design!

Awesome, I may have to order some A6 mags now and give them a shot. Awesome sounding pickups that seem to capture exactly what you were looking for, congrats!

A6 and A8, that's an interesting combo. Nice clean sound. It reminds me of my A4 Distortion neck set in parallel (which I was just playing).

Nice guitar wat wat.

Thx mofo.

Thx! Yep, A6 is very good and I'm sure you'll like it. I'm very happy with the vintage hot, rock, but classic direction I went in.

Yes, I'm surprised how clean the sound is. MJ really wound some magic. The Phat Cat wind (which I think is a Duncan flagship), plus the heat of the wind, plus the mags really worked together seamlessly.

Re: New Custom Shop Day!

New demo I did of the PCs with my new mic. I included the mid this time, it's 1st. Something interesting is I ended up with the poles on the mid flush below the cover for warmth and for the bridge I put the bass poles just popping above the cover and the treble poles a little higher to kind of mimic the effect of the slanted pickup.

Re: New Custom Shop Day!

Nice mids. Bass sounds pretty heavy for a bridge pickup, and very rounded highs.

Dig! Nicely done sir.

Thx!

Yep, I agree. I'm in D standard, play 10-49s, the pickup is slanted, and the recording always comes out bassier. So that all contributes. All I did to record was turn the highs up a tad from where I play. I could have probably eqd the amp further for a more balanced recorded sound but I'm pretty happy with it. It's representative of my sound just a bit on the bassy side. PS: the mid is 1st and I switch to the bridge half way through just so you know.

What mic and positioning? It's possible that the extra bass is the result of proximity effect or maybe room acoustics.

Re: New Custom Shop Day!

Yes, I think you are spot on. I put the md441 right up against the grill of the amp and also my bedroom is dead. I will experiment some more by moving the mic farther back from the amp and trying the 4 position bass cut and treble boost toggle on the mic, plus amp eq.

Comparing it to one of my favorite clean toans, I think the mic is farther back here:

I really like the sound of the two of them together. Very clean, clear and full. Makes me want to hear them with a TS and then some fuzz.
