In another thread I talked about the Greenie Set I ordered recently from the custom shop. It’s time for my next order. I think I’ll be having MJ make me 3 sets by the time I’m done, then I’ll fill the rest of my needs with production models. I’m not sure how much longer MJ will be winding, but a long time I hope. I simply want to have her wind some stuff for me now, while I can. The money is well spent to me.
The guitar for this set will be somewhat obscure, or at least I don’t see too many of them anywhere. It’s a USA made Dean Hardtail. I see lots of the Korean models though, just not the USA model. Anyhow, it’s a 2” mahogany body with a ¾” or so carved eastern maple cap. Mahogany set neck, ebony fretboard. Double cut but the upper horn holds quite a bit of mass. ABR bridge, Les Paul style controls. This one happens to be a quilted top in vintage sunburst. I have another with a spalted maple top that I bought needing a lot of work. That's what my last set will go in... when it's back from the luthier.
This will be my rock guitar. Everything from early Zeppelin to AC/DC and all that 70’s rock, up through 80’s rock like REO, GnR, Great White, Whitesnake, Motley Crue….you get the drift, blues based rock and hard rock. No flashy 80’s glam metal for this guitar. I have something for that.
The Choices:
Slash Set – the bridge pickup is right what I want. I’m going to ask MJ if it would work with an aged magnet like from the Antiquity line yet still have enough bite. The neck pickup I want underwound to 7.8/7.9 ish. Same magnet if it works. I want the neck to retain warmth without getting too congested like the A2P can get.
Aged zebra coils under a lightly aged nickel cover with aged screws. Long legs…. Wound with that special something that MJ imparts when she winds pickups.
Whole Lotta Humbucker Set – the bridge here is also mostly good. I’ll ask about using an un-oriented A5 mag, aged if possible. The neck pickup also needs to come down to 7.8/7.9 for my taste. Similar tonal quality as I want from the Slash neck, but maybe a bit more bite and crisp highs… but not like the 59’n and none of those boomy lows. I’ll ask about a UOA5 or maybe even an A III.
Same aged coils/cover with MJ’s special mojo.
I’d like to hear some thoughts or suggestions…. Maybe something I overlooked? As long as they’re positive or constructive; not telling me I’m dumb for wasting my money on a custom shop set. I’m not married to either combo just yet and who knows, I might end up ordering the other set for my 3rd set, as opposed to the Antiquities or Seth Lover Set I had in mind. Between the Greenie Set, the set I order this time and my final order...I want to make sure the sets are distinctive enough to be varied in sound, while all remaining "vintage". The Slash set is "vintage enough" for me, even if it isn't a PAF clone or variation.
Thank you in advance for your comments.
