New Dimension Fender Bass

Re: New Dimension Fender Bass

I have only tried the Am Std version. Physically, the instrument feels like a halfway house between P and J. Through passive VVT controls, the pickups sound fatter than a J pair but not as fat as two P pickups would. Not as juicy as a Stingray either.

IMO, some form of Roscoe Beck style coil switching would vastly increase versatility. The Deluxe may already have this capability.

The non-standard pickup shape makes replacement awkward. You'll have to like them or else.

Re: New Dimension Fender Bass

I may be old-fashioned, but the body doesn't have the appeal of a Jazz or Precision. Maybe in 10 or 20 years it'll grow on me.

Re: New Dimension Fender Bass

It looks like it is inspired by MusicMan and G&L basses. While I like the looks I wonder about whether the pickups are proprietary and if there are any replacements the same size?

New Dimension Fender Bass

Yeah, that's what I was gonna say. It reminds me a lot if both my L-2000 and my Stingray/Sabre hybrid. I think the sunburst and black ones look okay.

Re: New Dimension Fender Bass

Played seated or worn on a strap, the Dimension Bass feels like a Fender. It is just that the pickups look odd and the controls are not in the expected place.

The same would be equally true of, say, a Yamaha Attitude model or an ESP/LTD or Cort. In fact, that is what the Dimension Bass most reminds me of - a not-quite-a-copy design that draws heavily on the Fender tradition without being close enough to warrant litigation.

On a positive note, the Dimension Bass is now available as a Squier.

UPDATE - I have now played the Squier Dimension IV bass guitar. (One pickup, three-band active EQ.) It is plenty loud, plays like yer typical Squier Vintage Modified series instrument (i.e. nicely, regardless of the price), the EQ controls are a bit "sudden" in their action. The neck is nice but nowhere near as nice as the US models.

The "import" version of the Dimension dual coil pickup resembles nothing so much as two budget passive Jazz Bass single coils beneath an ugly plastic cover. I suspect that an EMG-35 or equivalent soapbar bass pickup would go in the pickup rout. There would, of course, be an unsightly gap around the edges.
