I prefer to use one that has been thoroughly fire/safety tested and achieved a UL rating (and they are not expensive).

but Ive certainly built them back in the day.

How is that "reactive"? It is a resistive load. Just a couple of resistors.

That circle of wire in the middle is called an "air core inductor"... this is what gives the unit it's reactiveness.
