New Duncan PU's

I'm getting ready to buy a cheap strat copy(I'm a beginner) I think it might be an Austin. Anyway the first thing I want to do is replace the pickups, I really respect Duncan PU's, but I want vintage replacements without the hum. I' ve looked at Fralin's, Lawrence, Holy Grails etc. Any ideas? I know this is picky, but most of the Duncan noiseless pu's aren't tradional looking.

The Classic stacks have excellent vintage strat sound without the hum. While no hum cancelling pickup will ever sound exactly like a true single, I think the Stacks come very close. SD is coming out with some new "stack" style pickups that incorporate an almost completely different design, with the goal of even more realistic single coil tone, and better hum cancelling. From all accounts they are amazing. I saw the design details at the factory tour on UGD, and they really are putting a lot into these new pickups.

The cheap route would be to look for some stacks on ebay. You definitely won't be disappointed with them, especially compared to the stock pickups in a cheap guitar. You can always sell them, if you want to upgrade when the new SD pickups come out.

Honestly, if you have the cash for the guitar and a set of pups I would look at a higher level instrument and worry about the pups later. The squiers don't suck like they used to. They are finally a respectable entry level instrument but for the extra $200 you are planning to drop on pups you could get a lot more instrument.

I would go with the SSL-1's matched set. The Antiquity Surf set is another vintage sounding set.

i agree. the pickups wont even sound that good in a crappy guitar. its like putting a set of 18 inch lexani rims on a kia
