New Duncans for Fat Strat???

Hey guys!

Being a huge Duncan guy, I am looking to maybe upgrade my American Standard strat which is a 2013 with stock Fender Diamond Back and Fat 50s single coils.

Any suggestions? Music is classic rock, pop, hard rock and grunge.

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

How about defining what you dislike about the current pickups?

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

IMO, the Fender Fat Fifties single coils are excellent, if slightly aggressive, pickups. I have never knowingly tried the DB humbucker.

What bridge saddle design does the Fender Am Std Stratocaster feature these days?

Yeah no reason to replace the Fats 50s unless he wants to spend the money for surfers or something. The DB is scooped but louder than a 59. A 78 or a Custom Custom might be interesting in such a strat.

The saddles are the bent steel vintage style.

The Fat 50's are awesome pickups. That's what I have in my Strat.

Again, we'd need to know what specifically he doesn't like about the current pickups to make any kind of suggestions.

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

Fender Fat 50s are a bit thin compared to the thick, fat and powerful stock single coils in my 2003 Highway strat!
On the Diamondback, I want a touch thicker with more mids and additional heat. I am thinking of the DuncanCustom/59 Hybrid.

Ironically, the Little 59 kills in my Telecaster!

why don't you get the same type of single coils in your 2003 strat for your fat strat, and for the humbucker, the '59/C hybrid should do the trick.

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

I will, thanks! I can still see myself going C/59 Hybrid and Duncan noiseless stacks.

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

you want fat and powerful?
Try the old american standard pickups that came OEM in american standards from the 80s/90s.
You can pick them up pretty cheap used, and flip em easily if you are not totally happy. Much more output and meat than fatties. They are meatier than texas specials even and have more low end. they are pretty low noise for a true single too.

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

Thanks gents! I am a huge Duncan guy and the Little 59 and Vinstage Stack with 500K pots sound amazing in my American Tele. One of the best sounding guitars I own. I guess that is giving me the itch to install a 59/Custom Hybrid and Stacks with 500K pots. When switching to humbuckers in a strat, I always use 500K pots because I like my Fenders to be brighter than my Gibsons. Funny, cause many of my Gibsons get the 300K volume pot treatment. :)

Re: New Duncans for Fat Strat???

Good evening guys! I have had more time on my new strat. One thing I have learned is that you must treat each guitar differently. Just because a certain pickup or pot configuration works in one guitar, doesn't mean the same will work well in another guitar. Case in point, you would think with a Tele you would want 250K pots but with the Little 59 and vintage stack, I use 500K pots and the guitar is rich, big, warm and fantastic. However, I am tempted to buy a Duncan Hot Tele Rhythm neck pickup. Maybe I should have kept the Fender Twisted Tele neck pickup but I have been pretty happy with the Vintage Stack.

My 2013 HSS strat is totally stock right now. The Fat 50s are good, but I would prefer no noise and maybe a touch thicker or hotter, but I can easily live with these for a while. They are cleaner than the pickups that were in my 2003 Highway and raising them close to the strings certainly gives me more fat and girth or hotness.
I have no issues with pickup noise with singles since in most band settings, I don't notice it much.

So, the Fender Diamondback humbucker I really do not like. Sounds too bright, brash and doesn't have the fullness or clarity that the Lil 59 has in my Tele.
I want to check out maybe the Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid, Pearly Gates, 59, or maybe a Dimarzio.
