New eBay guitar, (pre-Duncan), and a clip.

Peaveyologist
A month or so ago, I scored a great deal on a couple Stag Mags from John at BlackRose, on the trading post. So, I've been looking for something to put them in. Oddly enough, what I fell in love with, was a mid-to-early '80's MIA Peavey Patriot. (Which arrived Wednesday.)

Patriot.jpg

Whats so odd about this, (perhaps not), is that its virtually identical to my Peavey Predator, except that the Patriot is a hardtail, without the locking nut.
What I like about it is, while the photo makes it look white, its actually a kinda "vintage" cream color in person. Also, it has two oddball pickups. They're both humbucker-sized, single-coil rails. When the 3-way is in the middle, they're in "humbucker-mode".

But that presents a problem. I can't believe how good these p'ups sound.
BTW - They're called "Super - Ferrites". I'm not so sure I want to switch them out now. The neck position isn't all that notable, but the the neck/bridge combo has a great smooth sound, and the bridge by itself, has this great "jangly-clean" Strat sound. I like it much better than either of our two (cheap-ish) Strats.

I mustered up the courage to post a clip. (Ironic, since the first clip I post in this forum isn't going to be of Duncans.) Anyway . . . if you can get past my amatuerish playing, my mistakes, an equally amatuerish recording, and the occasional inexplicable crackly noise, that this guitar makes, (I'll trace it down eventually), I'ld love to hear what you think of the sound of these p'ups.

This is just a little thing I'm working on that I threw together real quick.

Tell me what you think. ;)

Not bad at all, pups sound pretty good to me too.

Re: New eBay guitar, (pre-Duncan), and a clip.

Don't think it is amateur at all!

From the sound sample the pickup have a very acoustic character. I like the sound but, it is my impresion or they sound kind of thin? May be if you push the gain a little bit...

Thanks Wattage. :)

. . . and thanks mongrollo. Its funny that you should say that it sounds "acoustic". I guess that means that my J-Station is doing its job. I used the "Flat Top" setting, because its the cleanest sound the "J" does, turning the cabinet simulation off. I went directly into the "J", into a mixing board, and then into my sound card using Adobe Audition. (Previously, Cool Edit Pro.)

Perhaps, I'll "Duncanize" this guitar after all. ;)

Re: New eBay guitar, (pre-Duncan), and a clip.

Very smooth, jazzy sound. You have a very good sense of timing (you don't play too much, just right). Do you like Wes?

Re: New eBay guitar, (pre-Duncan), and a clip.

Thanks Marin; that means a lot to me coming from you. I have quite a few of your clips and songs on my 'puter. ;)

I know, just from a couple different guitar forums, that you're refering to Wes Montgomery, although, I don't think I've ever actually heard any of his music. I'm going to swing by the local music store after work. What would be a good album or CD to "cut my teeth" on, of his?

Thanks, Artie

Edit: Did a little research, and it looks like Full House might be a good place to start. ;)

Ok . . . if I pop the Stag Mags in here, (and I probably will), I may send ya the Super Ferrites on a semi-long-term loan. I trust you. I'm just not sure I want to get rid of them. ;)

I'll let you know. (Hoping the pots and switches I ordered from Jameco.com get here soon.)

Re: New eBay guitar, (pre-Duncan), and a clip.

Just gotta say "thanks" again folks, for all the nice comments.
It really bolsters my confidence. Now, I just gotta go practice some more. ;)

I like that clip a lot!!! Do you mind if I burn it to disc, I'd like to have that on a party mix? I'm very biased about that guitar though, my first guitar was a peavey Patriot (natural finish) I lost that guitat in a bet for an Evander Holyfield fight. I can't remeber if he won or lost the fight but if I won that bet I would have had a stand up Arcade version wrestlign video game.

yo Artie, did ya dicide? I played one of those patriots, really nice guitar.

I'ld be honored. :) Keep in mind, its just a rough draft. I hope to build on the drums, and develop a chorus as soon as I can.

Thats a tough break. :smack: I'm really starting to like these older Peavey's. Did the guy, (gal?), who won it, play it? :)

Sorry for being wishy-washy bean, but I'm not sure I want to get rid of them now. I just took my cheap(ish) Strat apart to fix a tremolo problem, and discovered that it has a swimming-pool route. So, I may switch the Stag Mags over to it, and restore the Patriot.

Part of the problem with the SM's in the Patriot is, it has a "vintage" spaced bridge, and the strings aren't even close to lining up with the p'ups. (The Stag Mags, that is.)

I'll try to decide one way or t'other soon. ;)

Re: New eBay guitar, (pre-Duncan), and a clip.

That's a sweet sounding guitar. I wouldn't touch it if I were you.

Love the playing too. There's just something about the playing of an older guy that I like, maybe it's that we've led a life? We are the same age BTW. I must sort out some kind of clip, if you can do it - so can I.

But don't touch that guitar, whatever you do.

Thanks Lee;

Its funny you should say that. I just disassembled the Strat last night. The Stag Mags are going into it, and the Patriot is getting "restored". ;)
