New forumite here; need advice on p'ups

Hey guys, I'd just like to say hello to everyone first. Seems like a good community here, much better than the zoo over at HC where I've been posting for a while.

Here's my question:
I few months ago I purchased a Schecter Omen-6. It's a great overall guitar for how cheap it was, but I'm not too impressed with the Duncan "Designed" Detonators in it, even though they have a decent metal presence. They seem so muddy sometimes, and sharp others. What I basically need is clarity yet some decent lows for crunch and lots of palm-muting.

I'm thinking about purchasing a new set Duncans after listening to the sound clips on website, and right now I'm looking at a Custom for the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. Initially, I thought about going with the standard fare JB/'59 combo, but I thought the Custom had a bit more "oomph" to it, and the Jazz seemed to have some nice, jangly cleans.

Who here has experience with the Custom/Jazz combo (or individual) humbuckers? I'd appreciate the input. Oh, almost forgot - I play mostly old-school metal, hard rock, and yes, even some blues rock. My guitar is basswood, so I want to be sure that the combo I'm thinking of buying isn't going to be too bright or too muddy. I'm also a lefty guitarist, so it's rather difficult for me to check out the pickups I want on floor models.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Cheers! :smoker:

Welcome to the SD Forum!!

I have both of those pickups. They're not in the same guitar, but I do have both of them. From what you're describing, the sounds you're looking for, and the style of music you play.....those pickups should suit you perfectly.

Thanks, Jolly! BTW, I heard the soundclips on your site, and that Jazz/Jazz setup sounds REAL nice.

Welcome! Jolly gets the best tone out of a set of Jazz pickups that I've ever heard...those pickups rock and the name Jazz keeps to many people from giving them a try, IMO. Duncan ought to call them a 59 Lite or something... :smack:

Both pickups, the Jazz and the Custom are outstanding and I use 'em both in seperate guitars. BUT, I was told in another thread that mixing magnets can be a problem. The Jazz uses an Alnico 5 magnet and the Custom uses a ceramic.
I'm not sure how this affects the sound when the two types are used together, so maybe Lew or another member can chime in and shed some light on that issue.

By the way, welcome to the forum!!!

It doesn't affect anything with the different magnet types.

Thanks for the compliments fellas.:)

Re: New forumite here; need advice on p'ups

The only rule I tend to follow when combining humbucking pickups is to avoid using a neck pickup with alot more bass than the bridge pickup.

If I do, I feel like I have to keep the bass on the amp low to keep the neck pickup clear...and that makes the bridge pickup sound even thinner.

The ceramic Custom is a strong pickup with strong bass, mids and highs...it'll combine just fine with a a5 Jazz neck pickup.

The alnico 2 Custom Custom is the same pickup with an a2 magnet instead of ceramic. The CC has very prominant mids but softer treble and bass.

I wouldn't combine a CC with the Jazz, because that would be doing what I just said I wouldn't tend to do: combine a neck pickup with more bass than the bridge pickup.

(I've never tried that combo tho...for all I know it might sound just fine!)

When I use the CC, I tend to use another neck pickup that's also a2: the Seth Lover or Antiquity. That way both pickups need a little higher bass setting on my amp than a a5 or ceramic magnet pickup might and the overall tone between the two pickups sounds more balanced.

That's just what I tend to like...

Thanks Jolly, Lew, and midnite. You guys have been most helpful and now I don't feel so in-the-dark on my future set of 'buckers. I can't wait to install them! :afro:
