New Guitar Day: Suhr Ian Thornley

I have been selling off stuff I don’t use lately thinking I was done buying guitars. Then I met this amazing instrument. This is the Ian Thornley signature model guitar from the nice people at Suhr. The instrument has a 25.5 scale, roasted maple neck with a large V carve, Indian rosewood fingerboard, Jumbo stainless steel frets, and a 16 inch fingerboard radius. The body is roasted alder, which makes the guitar light and resonant. This guitar rings like a bell and has an almost reverb-y aura to the tone that is rare on new instruments but owners of vintage pieces will know well.

The pickups are, neck to bridge, an SSV-V70-SSH+. The 5 way does the normal 5 way switching you would expect except for the third position...on this model 3 is both humbuckers. The 2 mini toggles are for changing the humbuckers from series to parallel. This means I can pull off pretty much anything on this instrument.

I can’t praise this guitar enough. It sounds clear and articulate but is still fat sounding. The pickup versatility means I can cover a lot of territory with this guitar.

This is a real 5 Star instrument.

Very nice. I just saw Ian use this guitar (along with 7-8 others!) a few weeks ago. He's a very gifted guitarist with great tone.

Let's stop this, right now, oK? Back to the topic, ONLY.

It's an awesome color.

Thanks. It’s a very rich looking surf green, less candy than some others I’ve seen. The photos only sort of do it justice.

Re: New Guitar Day: Suhr Ian Thornley

The big benefit of the Jaguar/Jazzmaster shape is ergonomics. It puts the strings in an entirely different place than say a Strat or Tele, typically putting the nut farther from you and the bridge closer to the center of your body than your hip. Less need to chicken-wing your arm. More "cradling" the guitar.

As a matter of fact, after playing my Jaguars/Jazzmasters it's difficult to go back to a Strat; sometimes frustrating enough that I want to "quit" Strats. On top of that, to the un-trained eye (audience members who are fatigued of seeing Strats) there are a lot of positive comments on the streamlined, gorgeous Jazzmaster shape. I get lots of comments that they are much more graceful looking than "normal" guitars. I agree.

Suhr makes some wicked cool and outstanding fiddles. I dig the color as well. Enjoy the heck out of that thing.
