new guitar or new amp?

hey guys

this summer i'm looking to get either a new guitar or amp, i have about a $600 budget, and i want to get either a fender lite ash telecaster, or a traynor ycv-40wr. i've tried both, and love both, but i can choose only one, because the rest of the money i make this summer has to go for college tuition next fall. i am currently using a gibson sg special and a marshall avt20. right now i think i am leaning more towards a new amp, but i wanted to get some more input.

Re: new guitar or new amp?

I'm a bit of a tube amp snob, but I would go for the amp if I were in your place.

Re: new guitar or new amp?

amps aer the only way to polish a turd. if your guitar sucks (which it doesnt), get a great amp, it will make a world of difference. The amp is where most of your tones come from, i would go with that.

Getting a new amp will completely change things for you. Getting a new guitar has the potential to, but if you weren't satisfied with your SG, you wouldn't have started this thread.

When you need a new guitar, you KNOW it. If you hated your SG, you would make that Tele a priority so fast you wouldn't even think about it. I have a feeling you'd be better off with the new amp. Double hums through an all-tube sounds amazing, BTW.

Amp.

A great amp will make a crap guitar sound good.

A crap amp will make a great guitar sound like crap.

Re: new guitar or new amp?

I don't think the problem here is a crap guitar, guys.

Gibson SGs are actually really good. I think the biggest indicator that the original poster should get an amp is that he doesn't have any particular problem with his guitar at all. If he did, he wouldn't feel the need to ask our opinions.... he'd already buy the Tele by now.

Mrhat - That amp will kick ass. I'd go with it.

Re: new guitar or new amp?

thanks for the replies guys, i think ya'll are right about the amp, i think thats what i'll be getting. i love my sg, but i thought that maybe the tele would give me a larger variety of sounds, but i need to get the amp. i'll probably get it in the next couple weeks, i'll give ya'll and update when i get it.

Re: new guitar or new amp?

what have you got in the sg? you got any special switching? try coil splitting the buckers, so you get a lot of diferent pickup combos from it

Re: new guitar or new amp?

stupid question.

get the amp, that will make your current setup go from this good.. to THIS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!

that probably doesnt show the goodness increase very well.... but you have a decent guitar - get a better amp and voila! your tone will be better i assure you

and this will tide you over till you can afford to get the tele to plug into the new amp ;)

Re: new guitar or new amp?

davey, i dont have any special wiring in my sg, but that might not be a bad idea. do you know about how much it would cost to have the guitar wired so that the pups can be tapped?

Re: new guitar or new amp?

umm.. two push pull pots, if both of your humbuckers have 4 conductor wires, so you could split them with the pots.
so this along with the 3 way switch gives you:
bridge full
bridge split
neck full
neck split
both together full
together split
bridge split, neck full
bridge full, neck split

did i forget anything? so, 8 diferent pup combos to chose from for the cost of two pots.. so all of it for under 10$ .. you'd have to do a fair amount of soldering, but there are many gurus here that can help you through this step by step.. i dont know what you'd have to do to coil tap them, but even that can be arranged. just ask around on the forum

Re: new guitar or new amp?

Do you have the stock pups in the SG? I've got an SG Special as well, and it didn't really 'sing' until I pulled the stock pups out and dropped in the JB and '59. I don't have the Duncans tapped but I can get alot of versatility out of the SG by combining those pups or using them individually.

Re: new guitar or new amp?

i got a JB '59 combo in mine aswell (got the original '59 not the 4 condictor so i cant split em) and it sings.. after i put the EB hybrids, 9-46 strings on it can growl like no other.. thinking of going to the 10-46 set cos the GBe strings are a tad bright, but they're in the get-worn-in phase at the moment, so that might change in a day or two)
