new HRD speaker

Looking for Real Life
i've noticed when cranked, my hotrod loses almost all the bass response & fat sound i get at low volumes, so im looking for a speaker that will maintain the sound of a hotrod deluxe at low volumes, preferably above 40 watts cuz i hate speaker overdrive, any ideas?

Re: new HRD speaker

Try the Jensen C12N. Rated at 50 watts. Costs about $60.00. I can't believe I waited as long as I did before switching to the Jensen. It's so much better than the stock Eminence. :)

Re: new HRD speaker

I can't speak highly enough of the Jensen Neo 12-100.
It solved all the problems you are talking about and made the amp sound much better.

There are some clips on my music page but they are done at low volume.
The more volume you add the better it sounds, unlike the Eminence.

Re: new HRD speaker

The Reverend Alltone 1250 is a great speaker for the Hot Rod Deluxe. the guys at Reverend are good to work with also. About $50.00.

Re: new HRD speaker

Weber F150, Jensen C12n, or JBL D120f. I had all of those in my HRD at different times, and they were all very good for clean tone.

Re: new HRD speaker

i don't need good clean tone though, i play punk, of course it'd be NICE, since i play other things, but, my main concern is good punk tone, which i can get at low volumes

okay, so now im debating a jensen c12n, and, thanks to an e-mail from eminence, a legend 121, swamp thang, and the tonker

people that have hot rods, just think about how they sound at about 1 (or less), and tell me which one will sound like that at about 3 or 4...or 5 and beyond. Actually, now that i think about it, at higher volumes its kinda sounding like its under water, is this from lack of bass response by the speaker, or speaker od? in any case, it sounds perfect at about 1 or less, talking about the clean channel, i use a stompbox for distortion

and since its rated at 50 watts, if i retube the power section with tubes that don't OD as fast, can i pretty much count on having no speaker overdrive?

Yeah, the stock speaker gets real flabby and farty when cranked. The C12N won't do that. It maintains a very good continuity from low to high volumes and has a great bass response.

As for the headroom on your tubes, if you want loads of headroom go with some JJ/Tesla 6L6s for your power tubes and Sovtek 5751s in your preamp. If you want an early break up then I recommend Sovtek 5881s for the power tubes and Sovtek 12AX7 for the preamps. :smoker:

Re: new HRD speaker

one other thing though, how long should a new speaker take the tech to install? i think he charges like $60 an hour

Re: new HRD speaker

It took me about 30 minutes but that was with distractions from the old lady. You have to remove the back cover and chassis to access the speaker. Also, be sure to remind the technician to replace any shielding that gets scraped off of the interior of the cabinet when removing and replacing the chassis. It's a very tight fit and it envariably removes pieces of the shielding. :smoker:

That's a different story. For punk, I don't recommend the speakers that I mentioned above. Sorry, I don't think of the HRD as a punk amp. The clean tone is great but the distortion does not make me think "punk".
I actually thought the Celestion G12T75's sounded pretty good for more of a punk tone. You can get those for cheap, because people often replace them, out of their Marshall cabinets. I don't really like that speaker in a closed back but it was very decent for the dirty tones in the HRD. It has more of a dirty edge to it and I think the HRD's distortion sounds better with it.

I tried several tubes in my HRD and liked the EH 12ax7s with the Sovtek 6L6s.

Re: new HRD speaker

i don't use stock distortion, i use a modded ds-1, along with some other things

basically i don't want to change the overall tone of the speaker, i just want it to maintain the sound that the stock one has at low volumes, more full & thick & good bass & mids, it gets flabby & thin at higher volumes

and if people are telling me right that would be the jensen c12n
