New instrumental track -- WIP thread

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Thought it might be fun to post a work in progress song as it goes from demo to finished product. Unfortunately, I do not have the demo of this song as it went straight to template phase, but such as it is here is where the song is at thus far.

There is no mixing done yet, or even final guitar and bass tracks. These are DI guitar and bass tracks using the amp sims in Logic Pro X. The Kalimba is Logic's internal synth engine (to be resynthed using my outboard ROMplers) and the guitar and bass will be reamped along with the rest of the album in a month or so.

All of the electric guitars are my Agile AL2800 loaded with Bare Knuckle Riff Raff/Stormy Monday with a variety of wiring options. Strings are D'Addario Pure Nickel, 11's. Bass is my old Squire Bronco w a StewMac P bass pickup, D'Addario light strings, and played with a bone pick.

Thanks for listening! Astute world music afficianados will pick up on the fact that I played fast and loose w the rhythms on this song and there are all sorts of anachronisms -- mixing rhythms from diverse sections of Africa. I am not going for geographical accuracy :) . As for being innovative -- thanks for th compliment, but to my ears it's pretty heavily influenced by early Peter Gabriel and Trevor Rabin!

interesting - kinda like when captain beyond went all tango with sufficiently breathless. tones and percussion sound killer. might just leave as is!

Re: New instrumental track -- WIP thread

Very cool! Can't say I've ever heard anything like it before though..

^ I don't get the hostility, man. I'm not disagreeing with you, just don't see the point in your doling out mix advice on a songwriting demo that I've plainly said is not anywhere near to being ready.

For some strange reason I like it but don't know why. You ever try to play any afro cuban stuff?

Thanks for listening. Not played Afrocuban, but I did play guitar for a Cuban fusion project. Was fun while it lasted.

Re: New instrumental track -- WIP thread

Was able to resynth the Kalimba parts this morning. Was SUPER easy to do. Just created a new 'external MIDI' track, moved the MIDI part I wanted to export to that track and voila -- got MIDI going out from the 18i20 into the JV-1080 lickety split. I then fed the analogue output from the Roland back into the 18i20 and I was left with 2 versions of the track, my original MIDI track and the resynth'd audio track.

As the 'Kalimba' in LPX is really a modified Vibraphone, the Roland Kalimba track sounds MUCH better.

Next step is to add the rest of the synth tracks, then I will post the latest version.

Re: New instrumental track -- WIP thread

Looking forward to that.

To my ears, Roland JV-1080/-2080 sounds have slightly less high end definition than more recent digital synthesisers. IMO, this makes them sit better in a mix than the very latest sound sources.

Re: New instrumental track -- WIP thread

I agree and I think it's not just synths; people are looking for way more sizzle now across the board.

Re: New instrumental track -- WIP thread

I did briefly own two Roland JD-990 Super JD modules. I adore the sounds and the cutting quality of the D/A conversion chips but it is possible to have too much of a good thing. One JD, taking the lead part over a sea of JV backing parts, works better.

Top it off with a little Eno and you'll be all set.
