New Jazz pickup, microphonic feedback?

I've recently put a Hot Rodded Humbucker set in my SG and I'm getting really bad squeals through the Jazz at mid/high volume, resting my finger on the nickel cover almost totally stops it. The JB doesn't do it, I can hold it up to the amp and I only hear feedback from the (mostly muted) strings.

The thing is, I replaced a 57 classic in the neck for exactly the same reason...have I just had bad luck or could there be another cause?

*edit*

The JB kinda does it too but I have to turn up the gain and get really close to the amp, the Jazz squeals when standing all over the room though.

Just bad luck. If its new, take your right to return and give it back to the dealer.

On the other hand: its not too difficult to stop the cover feedback. Toss the cover competely or cut the solder blob open, put double sided stick tape or silicone blobs into the cover and resolder under pressure.

Yeah I only just bought them so I can get it replaced, pain in the ass though :(

Re: New Jazz pickup, microphonic feedback?

+1 to getting it replaced. SG's are super easy to replace pickups in.
If that doesn't change things, then you might be using too much gain for covered pickups.

Re: New Jazz pickup, microphonic feedback?

I'm assuming that if a low output pup is feeding back while the high output pup is quiet then it means I definitely have an issue, especially if I can press my finger on the cover to stop it. I'll ring up the dealer today and get it replaced :)

Re: New Jazz pickup, microphonic feedback?

The replacement pickup arrived in a smashed up box and one of the mounting legs is bent and very loose so I'm feeling exasperated right now.

Considering that my current pickup is fine apart from the feedback I'm wondering if I aught to just try fixing it myself. Does taping up the screwholes and slowly heating the front of the cover sound like a sensible idea?

Why tape up the screwholes?

What you are suggesting MAY work. But if you are going to the trouble of taking it out and fixing it, I wouldn't mess with something that "may" work. Either do what Hamerfan suggested or do a complete wax potting.

Why tape up the screwholes?

I assumed that the melted wax would otherwise run out of the holes.

I get your main point though, I could just as easily make things worse, and I'm really not equipped to open up or clamp a pup so I should probably just send it back.
