New Les Paul and amp! w00t!

This is a lesson to everyone on why you need to make sure you bring your favorite guitar with you while looking for a new amp. :chairfall

I had planned on Friday after work to go look at and possibly purchase a boutique style amp. My selection was a Victoria Tweed 35210, Victoria Regal, Marshall Bluesbreaker or Marshall 1974X handwired, all combos. I had played or heard these amps played before in the store but I never really sat down to hear the tonal differences.

I didn't really want to lug my R7 around in 20 degree temperatures so I figured I'd just use either the VOS R7 Goldtop or R8 they had in store to get a general idea of what the amps would sound like with my guitar. Stupid me decided instead to reach for the non-VOS '57 Custom Faded Cherry, bad idea. After playing through all the amps, my initial thought of the Regal being the amp for me was confirmed. The Bluesbreaker combo was seriously nice as well but it was a bit more than I was looking for. The tweed and the handwired combo's were a bit too raspy for my tastes but nice amps none-the-less.

So would I be happy with just bringing home the amp?

Of course not.

I think if an amp and guitar combo were made by God himself, this could quite possibly be it. The '57 is so ballsy it's sick, this thing has a ton of low end tone. I know Gibson says that the guitar has the Burstbucker 1/2 combo but it's almost hard to believe as it sounds nothing like the 1/2 combo that I've heard in any Historic before. I'll be pulling the pickups first string change to see what they are, as I've heard of Gibson not always putting what they adverstise into their guitars. I also need to take some measurements from both of my Burstbucker guitars to see what they read. It could also just as simple as it being a solid mahogany guitar.

It's not a light guitar, I'd venture to say close to 10lbs but it doesn't matter, the thing rocks. The neck is fat but not too fat, slightly slimmer than my R7 but still in the general area. I'm not sure if it's plek'd or not as it's an early '06 but it doesn't matter as the action is flawless and low. The ebony board feels fantastic as well. The craftsmanship is also second to none, I've had a ton of luck with Historic Gibson's as 95% of what I've played have been great guitars.

The Victoria Regal is a 15W (sounds more like 30W) single 6L6 tube Class A amp with a 15" Weber Classic Alnico speaker. In my opinion it perfectly overdrives the signal at higher volumes. It has built in trem and reverb which is one of the most lively reverb channels I've ever heard. It also goes to 12, eat your heart out Mr. Tufnel. :13:

I tried to make the pics interesting but I'm no photgrapher that's for sure. :laugh2:

Customs get 57 classics I believe...not BB 1/2

Congrats  Gorgeous amp and paula!

EDIT: and do not forget a ebony board and all mahogany body make for a very different tone than a standard...so BB1/2 could very well sound diff..but I do believe they have 57 classics.

Everyone in the store thought they were '57 Classics as well but Gibson lists them as BB 1/2's on their site. I guess I'll find out soon enough, I want to pull them now but I'm too lazy.

Dude, that guitar is KILLER. Not sure about the pickups, but, when I was looking for my R7 (which was in late 05), I played a lot of the historic LPs. I found that your experience was similar to mine. I played a 3 pup R7 Black Beauty as one of the guitars and even though it had the same pickups, the mahogany top and ebony board and other subtle differences made the hugest difference. Even guitars like the R8 and the R7 (totally the same except color) sounded different. Its in the wood.

Good luck with it, that Custom is beautiful, amp probably sounds amazing. I never played the Regal, but I have played a Victoria 35115 (Pro copy), a Trem de la Trem and a Victorilux and they were great amps.

VERRRRRY Nice beautiful stuff, be sure to post some sound bytes, can't wait to hear them!

Re: New Les Paul and amp! w00t!

Sweet setup! I'm sure you dropped some serious coin, but it surely wasn't wasted. I've had 2 Gibson LP 57 Customs in my life, and can attest to the ballsiness of those guitars. My 3 pup 57 is in my gearpages. I decided on gold covered C5/59n/59n for it. I like A5 pickups in all mahogany guitars, so the wood handles all the mids.....plus it tightens up the lows and adds more punch in the highs.

 :eyecrazy: :notworthy :32:

those pretty much sum up how I feel about that guitar. Beautiful.

Re: New Les Paul and amp! w00t!

congrats!... don't feel bad about this purchase at all (no matter what your budget I know all of us get a bit of buyer's remourse after dropping more than 3 grand in one store in one day).. that guitar is beautiful.. I love the finish; I've really been digging the gold hardware/ wine red finish combo on les paul customs.. also the mahagony grain on your guitar is beautiful.. it's quite refreshing to see a plain top seeing that the past year I've been staring at quilt/flame maple tops on PRS's and Gibsons

Re: New Les Paul and amp! w00t!

really nice. I've loved every Victoria I've tried, and recently bought the Double Deluxe. Can't wait to try a Regal...

...but are you sure it's a single 6l6 design?

-this is from Guitar Player's online review:

First, the Regal allows you to swap its stock Tung-Sol 6L6s with a combination of output tubes (EL34, 6550, 6V6, KT66, etc.)—all without re-biasing the amp. The single-ended design also gives off amazingly complex tones that are rich in even-order harmonics. In short, the amp is a tube-tone geek’s wet dream...

...The real fun begins once you start swapping tubes. Some of my favorite combinations were a 6L6 mixed with an EL34, which yielded tougher midrange tones, and a tad more top-end sparkle than the stock set. An EL34 and a 6V6 gave me a super spongy attack with loads of stringy detail, and a pair of KT66s produced a load more muscle and clean headroom.

-sounds like great fun

What a beautiful Paul...got to agree that is a beautiful top. Too many quilt and flame tops are garish IMO (Esseraca's Love Rock has a lovely subtle flame, but so many others look like Tony the Tiger) but that is just classy.

There is a Regal and a Regal II. The Regal uses one 6L6 while the II has two. I'm trying to remember the tube configuration in my Regal off the top of my head, I think it's 5U4 -> 6L6 -> (4) 12AX7's. One of those 12AX7's may be a 12AT7 but I'm not sure. They funny thing is it's not like your typical production amp were all of the tubes are matched, the 5U4 is a Groove Tube, the 6L6 is a Tung-sol, 2 of the 12AX7's are Groove Tubes, one is a Fender and I can't remember what the last one is.

Re: New Les Paul and amp! w00t!

I'm not usually in for wine red guitars but that one looks super nice! (and so does the gold top)

Very nice to see a Victoria in cream as well... first one I've spotted. They are almost always in tweed, which also is cool but.

Congrats on both! And the photos are pleasing as well... nice sleek looking with the white background. So I'd say you did a great job on that! :D
